Luke 15 · Grade 4

The Lost Son

Name Date

Read and Think

Luke 15 begins with a problem. Sinners were coming close to hear Jesus, and the religious leaders complained. Jesus answered with three stories about lost things. In each one, someone searches, finds, and celebrates.

The shepherd leaves the ninety-nine to look for one lost sheep. The woman lights a lamp and sweeps her house for one lost coin. When they find what was lost, they call their friends to rejoice. Jesus said heaven rejoices like that over one sinner who repents.

The third story is about two sons. The younger son demanded his share, left home, and wasted it. When a famine came, he fed pigs and longed to eat their food. He came to his senses and went home to confess. While he was still far off, his father saw him, felt compassion, and ran to him. The father gave him the best robe, a ring and sandals. The older son refused to join the party. The father gently invited him in, because his brother was dead and is alive again.

  2. The older brother was angry about grace for his brother. How can you celebrate when God shows mercy to others?

Memory Verse

“for this, my son, was dead and is alive again. He was lost and is found.’ Then they began to celebrate.”

Take It Home

For families: talk about these together.

  • How does God welcome you when you come back to Him?
  • How can you cheer when a friend chooses God?
  • Heaven rejoices when one person turns to God. How does that change how you see others?
