Showing Mercy

Name Date

Read and Think

Jesus sent out seventy followers in pairs to the towns He would visit. They returned full of joy because even evil spirits obeyed them in Jesus' name. Jesus told them to rejoice most because their names are written in heaven.

A lawyer tested Jesus by asking how to inherit eternal life. The answer was in the law: love God with all your heart, soul, strength and mind, and love your neighbor as yourself. Wanting to justify himself, the lawyer asked who his neighbor was. Jesus answered with a story. A traveler was robbed and left half dead. A priest and a Levite saw him and passed by. A Samaritan stopped. Jews and Samaritans did not get along, yet this man cared for the stranger like family.

Jesus did not ask, Who is my neighbor? He asked, Who acted like a neighbor? Mercy is the answer. At the end of the chapter, Martha welcomed Jesus but was distracted by serving. Mary listened at His feet. Jesus said only one thing is needed, and Mary chose it.
