When the Glory Appeared

Name Date

Read and Think

Leviticus 9 is the first day of Aaron's work as high priest. Everything had been prepared: the tabernacle, the priests, and the offerings. Moses told the people that if they did what God commanded, Yahweh's glory would appear to them.

Aaron offered a sin offering and a burnt offering for himself, then the offerings for the people: a sin offering, a burnt offering, grain offerings, and peace offerings. He did everything just as God had said. Then Aaron lifted his hands toward the people and blessed them.

When Moses and Aaron came out of the Tent of Meeting, Yahweh's glory appeared to all the people. Fire came from God and consumed the offering on the altar. The people shouted for joy and fell on their faces in worship. God had accepted their offering and shown He was with them.

Leviticus 9 · Grade 5

Glory and Fire

Name Date

Read and Think

After the seven days of ordination, on the eighth day Aaron began his ministry. Moses explained the purpose of the day: This is the thing which Yahweh commanded that you should do; and Yahweh's glory shall appear to you. All the preparation in Exodus and Leviticus pointed toward this moment of meeting with God.

Aaron first offered a calf as a sin offering and a ram as a burnt offering for himself, then the people's goat for a sin offering, a calf and a lamb for a burnt offering, a grain offering, and an ox and a ram for peace offerings. The order matters: first sin is dealt with, then the whole offering is given, and then fellowship is enjoyed. Aaron lifted his hands and blessed the people.

Moses and Aaron went into the Tent of Meeting, came out, and blessed the people; and Yahweh's glory appeared to all the people. Fire came out from before Yahweh and consumed the burnt offering. The people shouted, and fell on their faces. In John 1 we read that the Word became flesh and lived among us, and we saw His glory. In Jesus, God's glory came near in a person.

Show What You Know

  1. What did all the preparation point toward?

  2. What order did the offerings follow?

  3. What did the people do when fire came from God?

  4. Where does John 1 say we saw God's glory?
