Read the Story

God told Moses to gather the whole congregation at the door of the Tent of Meeting. Moses said, this is what God commanded. He brought Aaron and his sons and washed them with water.

Moses dressed Aaron in the tunic, the robe, and the ephod. He placed the breastplate on him with the Urim and Thummim. He put the turban on his head with the holy crown of gold. Then Moses anointed the tabernacle and poured oil on Aaron's head.

Moses offered a sin offering, a burnt offering, and a ram of consecration. He put some blood on the right ear, right thumb, and right big toe of Aaron and his sons. They stayed at the door of the tent seven days. Aaron and his sons did all that God commanded.

Leviticus 8 · Grade 4

Set Apart to Serve

Name Date

Read and Think

In Exodus, God gave instructions for making Aaron and his sons priests. In Leviticus 8, Moses carries them out before the whole congregation. Again and again the chapter says Moses did as Yahweh commanded.

Moses washed the men, dressed Aaron in the holy garments, and anointed the tabernacle and everything in it. Then he poured anointing oil on Aaron's head to sanctify him, which means to set him apart for God. Moses offered sacrifices and put blood on the right ear, thumb, and big toe of each priest. Their ears, hands, and feet were set apart for God's service.

For seven days the priests stayed at the Tent of Meeting. The chapter ends: Aaron and his sons did all the things which Yahweh commanded by Moses. Hebrews calls Jesus our great High Priest, and Peter says believers are a royal priesthood, set apart to serve God.

Show What You Know

  1. What phrase does the chapter repeat?

  2. What does sanctify mean?

  3. Why was blood put on the ear, thumb, and toe?

Leviticus 8 · Grade 5

Consecrated for God's Service

Name Date

Read and Think

Leviticus 8 describes the ordination of Aaron and his sons, fulfilling the instructions of Exodus 29. Moses assembled the congregation at the door of the Tent of Meeting and said, This is the thing which Yahweh has commanded to be done. The phrase as Yahweh commanded Moses echoes throughout the chapter, showing careful obedience.

Moses washed Aaron and his sons, clothed Aaron with the tunic, robe, ephod, breastplate, and turban with its golden plate, and anointed the tabernacle, the altar, and the basin. He poured oil on Aaron's head to sanctify him. Then came a bull for a sin offering, a ram for a burnt offering, and the ram of consecration. Blood was placed on the right ear, right thumb, and right big toe, marking the whole person for holy service.

The priests remained at the Tent of Meeting for seven days. Moses explained that what had been done was commanded to make atonement for them. Aaron needed offerings for his own sin before serving others. Jesus, our great High Priest, needed no offering for Himself, because He is without sin, and He lives forever to pray for His people.

Show What You Know

  1. Which chapter of Exodus does Leviticus 8 fulfill?

  2. What phrase echoes throughout the chapter, and what does it show?

  3. Name three sacrifices offered at the ordination.

  4. Why did Aaron need offerings for himself?

  5. How is Jesus different from Aaron as a priest?
