Leviticus 8 · Grade 5
Consecrated for God's Service
Read and Think
Leviticus 8 describes the ordination of Aaron and his sons, fulfilling the instructions of Exodus 29. Moses assembled the congregation at the door of the Tent of Meeting and said, This is the thing which Yahweh has commanded to be done. The phrase as Yahweh commanded Moses echoes throughout the chapter, showing careful obedience.
Moses washed Aaron and his sons, clothed Aaron with the tunic, robe, ephod, breastplate, and turban with its golden plate, and anointed the tabernacle, the altar, and the basin. He poured oil on Aaron's head to sanctify him. Then came a bull for a sin offering, a ram for a burnt offering, and the ram of consecration. Blood was placed on the right ear, right thumb, and right big toe, marking the whole person for holy service.
The priests remained at the Tent of Meeting for seven days. Moses explained that what had been done was commanded to make atonement for them. Aaron needed offerings for his own sin before serving others. Jesus, our great High Priest, needed no offering for Himself, because He is without sin, and He lives forever to pray for His people.
