Leviticus 7 · Grade 5
Thanksgiving, Promises, and Willing Hearts
Read and Think
Leviticus 7 completes the instructions for the five offerings. It explains the law of the trespass offering and spells out the priests' portions: the skin of the burnt offering, the grain offerings baked in an oven or pan, and portions of the sin and trespass offerings. Those who served at the altar lived from the altar.
Peace offerings came in three kinds. If he offers it for a thanksgiving, he was to bring unleavened cakes mixed with oil, unleavened wafers, and cakes of leavened bread. A vow offering fulfilled a promise to God, and a free will offering was given freely. Thanksgiving meat had to be eaten the same day, and other peace offerings by the second day; nothing was to be eaten on the third day.
The breast was waved before Yahweh as a wave offering and given to Aaron and his sons, along with the right thigh. The chapter ends by listing all the offerings God commanded Moses in Mount Sinai. Hebrews 13 calls believers to offer a sacrifice of praise to God continually. Thankful worship is still a gift God delights to receive.
