The Priests' Jobs

Name Date

Read the Story

God said that if anyone cheated or lied to his neighbor, he must give back what he took. He had to add a fifth part more. Then he brought a ram as a trespass offering, and the priest made atonement. He was forgiven.

Then God gave the priests rules. The burnt offering stayed on the altar all night until morning. The fire on the altar shall be kept burning on it, it shall not go out. Every morning the priest burned wood on it.

The priest wore linen clothes when he removed the ashes. Then he changed clothes and carried the ashes outside the camp. The priests also ate the grain offering and the sin offering in a holy place. These were their portion from God.

Leviticus 6 · Grade 4

A Fire That Never Goes Out

Name Date

Read and Think

Leviticus 6 begins by saying that cheating a neighbor is also a sin against the Lord. If someone lied about something left in his care, stole, or kept a lost item, he had to restore it in full and add a fifth part more. Then he brought a ram, and the priest made atonement for him.

Next, God gave instructions to Aaron and his sons. The burnt offering stayed on the altar all night. Fire shall be kept burning on the altar continually; it shall not go out. Each morning the priest added wood and removed the ashes, wearing his linen garments.

The chapter also explains how the priests ate the grain offering and the sin offering in a holy place. The priests had daily work to do. Their faithfulness every morning and every night is a picture of steady, everyday worship of God.

Leviticus 6 · Grade 5

Faithful Morning and Night

Name Date

Read and Think

In the English numbering of the Bible, Leviticus 6 opens with a law about wronging a neighbor. Deceiving him about a deposit, robbing him, oppressing him, or lying about a lost thing are all called a trespass against Yahweh. The guilty person had to restore it in full and add a fifth part more, and bring a ram for a trespass offering. Then he will be forgiven.

From verse 8, the commands turn to the priests. The burnt offering was to remain on the altar all night until the morning, and the fire of the altar shall be kept burning on it. Every morning the priest put on his linen garment, removed the ashes, changed his clothes, and carried the ashes outside the camp to a clean place. Then he laid wood on the fire again.

The chapter adds laws for the grain offering, the priest's own daily offering, and the sin offering, which was most holy and eaten in a holy place. The repeated tasks are not dramatic, but they mattered to God. The New Testament tells believers to pray without ceasing and to be faithful in small things. God is pleased by steady, faithful love.
