Leviticus 4 · Grade 2

Even by Mistake

Name Date

Read the Story

Sometimes people did wrong things by mistake. They did not plan to sin. But it was still sin. God gave a way to fix it.

If a priest sinned, he brought a young bull. If all the people sinned, they brought a bull too. If a leader sinned, he brought a goat. If any other person sinned, he could bring a goat or a lamb.

The priest put the gift on the altar. Then God said the person would be forgiven. God cares about sin. He also loves to forgive. Jesus is the Lamb of God who takes away sin.

Memory Verse

“He shall do this with the bull; as he did with the bull of the sin offering, so he shall do with this; and the priest shall make atonement for them, and they shall be forgiven.”

Leviticus 4 · Grade 3

A Way to Be Forgiven

Name Date

Read the Story

God told Moses about the sin offering. It was for when someone sinned unintentionally. That means they did not mean to do wrong, but they still broke one of God's commands.

There were different gifts for different people. The anointed priest brought a young bull. The whole congregation brought a young bull. A ruler brought a male goat. Any one of the common people brought a female goat or a female lamb.

Each person laid a hand on the head of the offering. The priest sprinkled the blood and burned the fat on the altar. Again and again the chapter says the priest shall make atonement, and he will be forgiven. God made sure everyone, from leaders to ordinary people, could be forgiven.

Memory Verse

“He shall do this with the bull; as he did with the bull of the sin offering, so he shall do with this; and the priest shall make atonement for them, and they shall be forgiven.”

Sins We Do Not Notice

Name Date

Read and Think

Leviticus 4 is about sins done unintentionally. Sometimes people break God's commands without meaning to, or without even knowing it at first. God still takes these sins seriously, because He is holy. But He also gives a way to be forgiven.

The offering depended on who had sinned. The anointed priest and the whole congregation brought a young bull. A ruler brought a male goat. One of the common people brought a female goat or a lamb. Leaders had a bigger responsibility because their sin affected many people.

In each case the worshiper laid his hand on the animal's head, and the priest made atonement. The chapter repeats the promise: he will be forgiven. These sin offerings point to Jesus, who died for our sins. First John 1 says that if we confess our sins, He is faithful to forgive us.

Leviticus 4 · Grade 5

Atonement for Every Person

Name Date

Read and Think

The fourth chapter of Leviticus introduces the sin offering. It deals with a person who sins unintentionally, in any of the things which Yahweh has commanded not to be done. God's holiness means that sin, even unknowing sin, separates people from Him. Yet God does not leave them stuck; He provides a remedy.

The chapter moves through four groups: the anointed priest, the whole congregation, a ruler, and one of the common people. The more responsibility a person had, the larger the offering. For the priest and the congregation, blood was sprinkled seven times before the veil, and the rest of the bull was burned outside the camp in a clean place.

For every group the result is the same: the priest shall make atonement for them, and they shall be forgiven. Hebrews 13 notes that Jesus also suffered outside the gate, like the sin offering burned outside the camp, so that He might make His people holy. Our sins, known and unknown, can be forgiven through Him.
