Leviticus 4 · Grade 5
Atonement for Every Person
Read and Think
The fourth chapter of Leviticus introduces the sin offering. It deals with a person who sins unintentionally, in any of the things which Yahweh has commanded not to be done. God's holiness means that sin, even unknowing sin, separates people from Him. Yet God does not leave them stuck; He provides a remedy.
The chapter moves through four groups: the anointed priest, the whole congregation, a ruler, and one of the common people. The more responsibility a person had, the larger the offering. For the priest and the congregation, blood was sprinkled seven times before the veil, and the rest of the bull was burned outside the camp in a clean place.
For every group the result is the same: the priest shall make atonement for them, and they shall be forgiven. Hebrews 13 notes that Jesus also suffered outside the gate, like the sin offering burned outside the camp, so that He might make His people holy. Our sins, known and unknown, can be forgiven through Him.
