One Out of Ten

Name Date

Read the Story

Sometimes people made a special promise to God. They might give a field, a house, or an animal. God said, Keep your promises.

God also said, One tenth of your crops belongs to Me. One tenth of your fruit and your animals belongs to Me too. That is called a tithe.

Everything we have comes from God. When we give back to Him, we say thank You. Giving shows that we love and trust God.

Memory Verse

“‘All the tithe of the land, whether of the seed of the land or of the fruit of the trees, is Yahweh’s. It is holy to Yahweh.

Leviticus 27 · Grade 3

Holy to Yahweh

Name Date

Read the Story

Leviticus 27 is the last chapter of the book. It is about vows, special promises to give something to God. A person could promise himself, an animal, a house, or a field.

Each gift had a set value. If someone wanted to buy back what he had promised, he paid its value and added one fifth more. This taught people that promises to God are serious.

The chapter ends with the tithe. A tenth of the grain, the fruit of the trees, and the herds belonged to Yahweh. As the animals passed under the shepherd's rod, every tenth one was holy. The book ends, These are the commandments which Yahweh commanded Moses.

Memory Verse

“‘All the tithe of the land, whether of the seed of the land or of the fruit of the trees, is Yahweh’s. It is holy to Yahweh.

Leviticus 27 · Grade 4

Promises and the Tithe

Name Date

Read and Think

Leviticus ends with a chapter on vows. A grateful worshiper might dedicate a person, an animal, a house, or a field to Yahweh. Values were set for each. Persons were valued by age and sex, likely based on the work they could do, not on their worth to God.

If someone wished to redeem, or buy back, what he had vowed, he paid the value plus one fifth. A vow was not to be made lightly. Ecclesiastes 5:4-5 later says it is better not to vow than to vow and not pay.

The tithe of the land and of the flock was already holy to Yahweh. It could not be vowed again, because it already belonged to Him. Jesus praised generous giving and warned against giving only for show. The book that began with offerings ends with a reminder that all we have belongs to God.

Leviticus 27 · Grade 5

Everything Belongs to God

Name Date

Read and Think

Leviticus 27 closes the book with laws about vows. When someone made a special vow, he could dedicate a person, an animal, a house, or a field to Yahweh. A person was usually redeemed by paying a set amount of silver, with amounts varying by age and sex. These amounts likely reflected the labor a person could provide in that society, not a judgment of human value before God. The poor could be valued according to what they could afford.

Animals fit for sacrifice became holy and could not be exchanged. Unclean animals, houses, and fields could be redeemed by paying the priest's valuation plus a fifth. Fields were valued according to the years remaining until the Jubilee, tying this chapter to chapter 25. Firstborn animals could not be vowed, because they already belonged to God.

The final laws concern the tithe: All the tithe of the land, whether of the seed of the land or of the fruit of the trees, is Yahweh's. As flocks passed under the rod, every tenth animal was holy, whether good or bad, with no swapping. The book ends, These are the commandments which Yahweh commanded Moses for the children of Israel on Mount Sinai. Leviticus begins with God calling from the tent and ends with God's claim on everything His people have. Paul later urges believers to present their bodies as a living sacrifice (Romans 12:1), giving all of themselves to God.

  2. What did the valuation amounts likely reflect?

  3. How were fields valued?

  4. Why could firstborn animals not be vowed?

  5. What does Paul urge in Romans 12:1?
