A Year of Freedom

Name Date

Read the Story

God told His people to let the land rest every seventh year. They did not plant seeds that year. God promised to give them enough food.

Every fiftieth year was extra special. It was called the Jubilee. A trumpet was blown. Families who had lost their land got it back.

People who had to work for others because they were poor could go home free. God said, The land is Mine. In the New Testament, Jesus came to bring freedom to people who are trapped by sin (Luke 4:18).

Memory Verse

“You shall make the fiftieth year holy, and proclaim liberty throughout the land to all its inhabitants. It shall be a jubilee to you; and each of you shall return to his own property, and each of you shall return to his family.”

Leviticus 25 · Grade 3

Proclaim Liberty

Name Date

Read the Story

God gave Israel rules for the land. Every seventh year, the land would have a Sabbath rest. No one planted or pruned. God promised a big harvest in the sixth year so they would have enough.

Every fiftieth year was the Year of Jubilee. On the Day of Atonement, the trumpet sounded. Liberty was proclaimed to all. Each family returned to its land.

God said, The land is Mine. If someone became poor and sold land or worked for another, he could go free in the Jubilee. God said, You shall not wrong one another. In the New Testament, Jesus said He came to proclaim release to the captives (Luke 4:18).

Memory Verse

Leviticus 25 · Grade 4

The Land Is Mine

Name Date

Read and Think

Leviticus 25 gives two special times. Every seventh year was a Sabbath year, when the land rested. The people had to trust God, who promised a large harvest in the sixth year to carry them through.

Every fiftieth year was the Year of Jubilee. The trumpet sounded on the Day of Atonement, and liberty was proclaimed throughout the land. Land that had been sold went back to the original family. Poor Israelites who had sold themselves into service went free with their children.

God explained, The land is mine; for you are strangers and live as foreigners with me. Israel did not own the land forever; they were God's guests. So they must help a poor brother, lend without interest, and not rule over him harshly. In Luke 4:18-19, Jesus read from Isaiah about the year of the Lord's favor and said it was fulfilled in Him.

Leviticus 25 · Grade 5

Liberty Throughout the Land

Name Date

Read and Think

Leviticus 25 extends the Sabbath principle from days to years. Every seventh year the land enjoyed a Sabbath of solemn rest. No sowing, no pruning, no organized harvest. Whatever grew on its own was food for everyone, including servants, foreigners, and animals. Anticipating Israel's worry, God promised to command His blessing on the sixth year so that it would bring forth fruit for three years.

After seven sabbaths of years came the fiftieth year, the Year of Jubilee. On the Day of Atonement the trumpet sounded and liberty was proclaimed throughout the land. Each person returned to his property and family. Land sales were really leases priced by the number of harvests until Jubilee, because the land shall not be sold in perpetuity, for the land is mine.

The chapter also protects the poor. A poor relative could be redeemed by a kinsman. Israelites were not to charge interest to a struggling brother. One who sold himself because of poverty was to be treated as a hired worker, not a slave, and released at Jubilee, for they are my servants, whom I brought out of the land of Egypt. The chapter also permitted buying servants from the nations; this reflects the ancient setting and is not God's endorsement of slavery as practiced later. In Luke 4:18-19 Jesus read Isaiah's words, to proclaim release to the captives, and announced that the Scripture was fulfilled in Him.

Show What You Know

  1. What did God promise to do in the sixth year?

  2. When was liberty proclaimed in the Jubilee?

  3. Why were land sales really leases?

  4. How was an Israelite who sold himself because of poverty to be treated?

  5. What did Jesus announce in Luke 4:18-19?
