Lamp and Loaves

Name Date

Read the Story

God told His people to bring pure olive oil. The oil kept the lamps burning in His tent. The lamps never went out.

Every Sabbath the priest set twelve loaves of bread on a gold table. There was one loaf for each tribe of Israel. The bread was a reminder that God was with all His people.

God also said His name is holy. We must never use God's name in a bad way. In the New Testament, Jesus said, I am the light of the world (John 8:12). He also said, I am the bread of life (John 6:35).

Before Yahweh Continually

Name Date

Read the Story

Leviticus 24 begins with the lamps in the Tent of Meeting. The people brought pure olive oil beaten for the light. Aaron kept the lamps in order from evening until morning, before Yahweh continually.

Next came the bread. Twelve cakes of fine flour were set in two rows on the pure gold table. Every Sabbath they were set in order again. Then Aaron and his sons ate them in a holy place.

Then a sad event happened. A man cursed the name of God. The people asked Moses what to do, and God said the man must be punished. God's name is holy. God also said there must be one law for the foreigner and the native-born.

Leviticus 24 · Grade 4

Light, Bread, and Justice

Name Date

Read and Think

Leviticus 24 starts with two signs of God's ongoing presence. Pure olive oil kept the lamps burning every night before Yahweh. Twelve loaves, one for each tribe, were set on the golden table every Sabbath as an everlasting covenant. God was always present with His whole people.

Then the chapter tells of a man, the son of an Israelite mother and an Egyptian father, who blasphemed the Name. The people held him until they learned Yahweh's will. God declared that blasphemy was a grave sin and must be punished. God's name is holy and must not be cursed.

God then gave laws of fair justice: life for life, eye for eye, tooth for tooth. These limited punishment so it would fit the crime, not grow into revenge. And there was one law for foreigners and Israelites alike. In Matthew 5, Jesus taught His followers not to seek personal revenge but to love their enemies.

Leviticus 24 · Grade 5

The Holy Name

Name Date

Read and Think

Leviticus 24 opens with the daily and weekly care of the holy place. The people supplied pure olive oil beaten for the light, so the lamps could burn continually before Yahweh. The priest also baked twelve cakes and set them in two rows on the pure gold table, with frankincense as a memorial. Every Sabbath day he shall set it in order before Yahweh continually. The bread represented the twelve tribes held in God's presence by an everlasting covenant.

The narrative that follows is sobering. During a fight, the son of an Israelite woman and an Egyptian man blasphemed the Name and cursed. Moses did not act on his own; the man was held in custody until Yahweh's will should be declared to them. God commanded that he be put to death, showing that to curse God was a grave offense against the holy One who dwelt among them.

God then stated principles of justice: whoever takes a human life must face justice, and injury must be repaid in kind, life for life and eye for eye. This principle limited penalties to what was fair, and it applied to the community's courts, not personal vengeance. You shall have one kind of law for the foreigner as well as the native-born. Jesus later taught His disciples not to retaliate personally, but to turn the other cheek (Matthew 5:38-39). He Himself is the light of the world and the bread of life (John 8:12; 6:35).

Show What You Know

  1. What did the twelve cakes represent?

  2. What did Moses do before acting?

  3. What did the punishment show?

  4. To whom did the eye for eye principle apply?

  5. What did Jesus teach in Matthew 5:38-39?
