The Set Feasts of Yahweh

Name Date

Read the Story

Leviticus 23 lists the set feasts of Yahweh. First came the Sabbath, a day of rest every seventh day. Then came Passover in the first month. The Feast of Unleavened Bread followed for seven days.

When the people reaped their harvest, they waved the first sheaf of grain before Yahweh. Fifty days later came the Feast of Weeks. It was a party for the wheat harvest. In the seventh month came the Feast of Trumpets and the Day of Atonement.

The last feast was the Feast of Booths. For seven days, the people lived in booths made of branches. They remembered that God made Israel live in booths after leaving Egypt. Jesus died at Passover, and the Holy Spirit came at the Feast of Weeks, called Pentecost.

“‘These are the set feasts of Yahweh, even holy convocations, which you shall proclaim in their appointed season.

A Year with God

Name Date

Read and Think

Leviticus 23 gives Israel a calendar built around God. It begins with the Sabbath, a day of rest each week. Then it lists the feasts. These were holy times to gather, rest, and remember what God had done.

In spring came Passover and the Feast of Unleavened Bread. These recalled the night God rescued Israel from Egypt. The first bundle of barley was waved before Yahweh. Fifty days later came the Feast of Weeks, for the wheat harvest. Farmers were told to leave grain at the edges for the poor and foreigner.

In the fall came the Feast of Trumpets, the Day of Atonement, and the Feast of Booths. At Booths, Israel lived in shelters for seven days. The New Testament says Jesus is our Passover Lamb (1 Corinthians 5:7). He died at Passover. He rose as the firstfruits (1 Corinthians 15:20). The Spirit came at Pentecost.

Leviticus 23 · Grade 5

Holy Convocations

Name Date

Read and Think

Leviticus 23 organizes Israel's year around the set feasts of Yahweh, even holy convocations, which you shall proclaim in their appointed seasons. The list begins with the weekly Sabbath, a day of complete rest. Time itself belonged to God, and these gatherings kept His saving acts at the center of Israel's memory.

The spring feasts began with Passover on the fourteenth day of the first month, followed by seven days of Unleavened Bread. When they first reaped the harvest, the priest waved the sheaf before Yahweh on the day after the Sabbath. Then they counted seven Sabbaths, fifty days, to the Feast of Weeks, when new grain was offered. In the middle of the harvest laws, God repeats the command to leave the corners of the fields for the poor and the foreigner.

The fall feasts came in the seventh month. There was a memorial of blowing trumpets on the first day, the Day of Atonement on the tenth, and the Feast of Booths beginning on the fifteenth. For seven days Israel lived in booths, that your generations may know that I made the children of Israel to dwell in booths when I brought them out of the land of Egypt. The New Testament connects several feasts to Christ. He is our Passover (1 Corinthians 5:7), raised as the firstfruits of those who have died (1 Corinthians 15:20), and the Spirit was given on the day of Pentecost (Acts 2:1).
