Leviticus 22 · Grade 3

Accepted Gifts

Name Date

Read the Story

Leviticus 22 tells the priests to respect the holy things the people gave. A priest who was unclean had to wait until the sun was down before eating holy food. Only his household could eat it, not a visitor or a hired worker.

God also gave rules for the people's gifts. Every offering had to be without defect. God said a blind, broken, or sick animal would not be accepted. The people were to give God their best, not their leftovers.

God even showed care for animals. A cow and her young were not to be killed on the same day. The chapter ends, I am Yahweh, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, to be your God.

Leviticus 22 · Grade 4

Without Blemish

Name Date

Read and Think

Leviticus 22 deals with how priests and people treated holy offerings. Priests had to keep from eating holy food while unclean. They had to wait until evening and wash. The holy food belonged only to the priest's household, including servants born in his house.

God said every sacrifice must be without blemish to be accepted. Animals that were blind, injured, or sick were not acceptable. Giving God a damaged animal showed a careless heart. Malachi 1 later rebuked Israel for doing exactly this.

Why did it matter? The offerings pointed to the perfect sacrifice to come. 1 Peter 1:19 says we were redeemed with precious blood, as of a lamb without blemish or spot, the blood of Christ. Jesus was the only truly spotless offering.

Leviticus 22 · Grade 5

The Acceptable Offering

Name Date

Read and Think

Leviticus 22 addresses the holy things, the portions of offerings that belonged to the priests. A priest who had become unclean was not to eat them until he was clean again; when the sun is down, he shall be clean. Holy food was for the priest and his household, including those born in his house, but not for a visitor or hired servant. Holy things were not to be treated casually.

The second half of the chapter concerns the offerings themselves. Whether for a vow or a freewill offering, an animal had to be without blemish to be accepted. Blind, injured, maimed, or diseased animals were unacceptable. The rule taught Israel to honor God with their best. Malachi 1 later shows that offering defective animals revealed contempt for God.

The chapter closes with God's covenant reasons: keep my commandments, do not profane my holy name, I will be made holy among the children of Israel, I am Yahweh who makes you holy, who brought you out of the land of Egypt. The demand for unblemished sacrifices points forward to Christ, who offered Himself without blemish to God (Hebrews 9:14). Through His perfect offering, believers are made acceptable to God.
