Leviticus 20 · Grade 3

Sanctify Yourselves

Name Date

Read the Story

Leviticus 20 warns Israel about very serious sins. God told His people not to follow the ways of the nations around them. He said these sins were very bad.

Why was God so serious? Because His people were to be different. God said, Sanctify yourselves therefore, and be holy; for I am Yahweh your God. To sanctify means to set apart for God.

At the end of the chapter, God gave a beautiful reason. He said, I have set you apart from the peoples, that you should be mine. God wanted Israel as His own treasured people.

Memory Verse

“‘Sanctify yourselves therefore, and be holy; for I am Yahweh your God.

Leviticus 20 · Grade 4

Holy to Me

Name Date

Read and Think

Leviticus 20 gives penalties for sins named earlier in the book. These include giving children to Molech, seeking mediums, cursing parents, and sins against marriage. The penalties were severe. They show how seriously God takes sin that hurts families and turns hearts from Him.

In the middle of these warnings, God gives His people a calling: Sanctify yourselves therefore, and be holy. He also gives a promise: I am Yahweh who sanctifies you. God does not only command holiness. He makes His people holy.

The chapter ends: You shall be holy to me, for I, Yahweh, am holy, and have set you apart from the peoples, that you should be mine. Peter uses words like these for Christians. He says we are a chosen people, God's own possession (1 Peter 2:9).

  3. What promise does God give?

Leviticus 20 · Grade 5

Chosen and Set Apart

Name Date

Read and Think

Leviticus 20 restates many of the commands of chapters 18 and 19, this time with penalties attached. It condemns giving children to Molech, turning to mediums and spiritists, cursing father or mother, and serious sins against marriage and family. Many of these carried the death penalty under Israel's law. The severity reveals that these sins were attacks on life, family, and the worship of the one true God.

Yet the chapter is not only about punishment. God repeats His purpose: Sanctify yourselves therefore, and be holy; for I am Yahweh your God. You shall keep my statutes, and do them. I am Yahweh who sanctifies you. Holiness is both Israel's responsibility and God's work in them.

The closing verses describe the land as a gift and holiness as a calling. God said He had separated Israel from the peoples, and so they were to distinguish between clean and unclean. You shall be holy to me, for I, Yahweh, am holy, and have set you apart from the peoples, that you should be mine. The New Testament shows that the penalty of sin fell on Christ (2 Corinthians 5:21; 1 Peter 2:24), and those in Him are a people for God's own possession.
