Leviticus 20 · Grade 5
Chosen and Set Apart
Read and Think
Leviticus 20 restates many of the commands of chapters 18 and 19, this time with penalties attached. It condemns giving children to Molech, turning to mediums and spiritists, cursing father or mother, and serious sins against marriage and family. Many of these carried the death penalty under Israel's law. The severity reveals that these sins were attacks on life, family, and the worship of the one true God.
Yet the chapter is not only about punishment. God repeats His purpose: Sanctify yourselves therefore, and be holy; for I am Yahweh your God. You shall keep my statutes, and do them. I am Yahweh who sanctifies you. Holiness is both Israel's responsibility and God's work in them.
The closing verses describe the land as a gift and holiness as a calling. God said He had separated Israel from the peoples, and so they were to distinguish between clean and unclean. You shall be holy to me, for I, Yahweh, am holy, and have set you apart from the peoples, that you should be mine. The New Testament shows that the penalty of sin fell on Christ (2 Corinthians 5:21; 1 Peter 2:24), and those in Him are a people for God's own possession.
