A Gift from the Field

Name Date

Read the Story

God told His people about the grain offering. They could bring fine flour to God. They poured oil on it. They put sweet incense on it too.

They could bake it in an oven. They could cook it on a flat pan. But they could not add yeast or honey. They had to add salt to every grain offering.

The priest burned a handful on the altar. It was a sweet smell to God. The rest of the flour was for the priests to eat. God took care of His priests this way.

Memory Verse

“Every offering of your meal offering you shall season with salt. You shall not allow the salt of the covenant of your God to be lacking from your meal offering. With all your offerings you shall offer salt.”

Leviticus 2 · Grade 3

Fine Flour and Salt

Name Date

Read the Story

The grain offering was a gift from the field. A person brought fine flour, poured oil on it, and added frankincense. Frankincense is a sweet-smelling spice.

The flour could be baked in an oven or cooked on a griddle or in a pan. It had to be made without yeast. No honey could be burned on the altar either. Every grain offering had to be seasoned with salt, called the salt of the covenant of your God.

The priest took a handful as a memorial and burned it on the altar. It was a pleasant aroma to the Lord. The rest belonged to Aaron and his sons. It was a most holy part of the offerings. The people also brought first fruits, the first grain of the harvest.

Memory Verse

“Every offering of your meal offering you shall season with salt. You shall not allow the salt of the covenant of your God to be lacking from your meal offering. With all your offerings you shall offer salt.”

Leviticus 2 · Grade 4

The Salt of the Covenant

Name Date

Read and Think

Not every offering in Leviticus was an animal. In the grain offering, people brought fine flour with oil and frankincense. It was a gift from the work of their hands and the harvest God gave them.

The offering could be baked, cooked on a griddle, or prepared in a pan, but it had to be made without yeast or honey. God also said every grain offering must be seasoned with salt. He called it the salt of the covenant of your God, a reminder of His lasting promise to His people.

The priest burned a handful as a memorial on the altar, and the rest belonged to the priests. This gave the priests food as they served. The grain offering shows that God cares about our everyday work, and that giving back to Him is a way of saying thank You.

Leviticus 2 · Grade 5

Offerings from Everyday Life

Name Date

Read and Think

The second chapter of Leviticus describes the meal offering, or grain offering. A worshiper brought fine flour, poured oil on it, and put frankincense on it. Unlike the burnt offering, this gift came from the fields and kitchens of ordinary families.

It could be baked in an oven as unleavened cakes, made on a griddle, or cooked in a pan. No yeast or honey was to be burned as an offering made by fire. The chapter does not explain why; it simply gives God's instructions. But one ingredient was required every time: Every offering of your meal offering you shall season with salt. God called it the salt of the covenant, a sign that His covenant lasts.

The priest burned a handful as a memorial on the altar, a pleasant aroma to the Lord, and the rest became food for Aaron and his sons. First fruits of the harvest could be brought too, as fresh heads of grain parched with fire. The whole chapter teaches that worship is not only for special moments. Our daily bread and daily work can be offered to God with thankful hearts.

  2. What two things could not be burned as an offering?

  3. What did God call the salt?
