Offerings from Everyday Life

Read and Think

The second chapter of Leviticus describes the meal offering, or grain offering. A worshiper brought fine flour, poured oil on it, and put frankincense on it. Unlike the burnt offering, this gift came from the fields and kitchens of ordinary families.

It could be baked in an oven as unleavened cakes, made on a griddle, or cooked in a pan. No yeast or honey was to be burned as an offering made by fire. The chapter does not explain why; it simply gives God's instructions. But one ingredient was required every time: Every offering of your meal offering you shall season with salt. God called it the salt of the covenant, a sign that His covenant lasts.

The priest burned a handful as a memorial on the altar, a pleasant aroma to the Lord, and the rest became food for Aaron and his sons. First fruits of the harvest could be brought too, as fresh heads of grain parched with fire. The whole chapter teaches that worship is not only for special moments. Our daily bread and daily work can be offered to God with thankful hearts.
