Leviticus 17 · Grade 5
The Blood Makes Atonement
Read and Think
Leviticus 17 turns from the Day of Atonement to everyday sacrifice. Any man of Israel who killed an ox, lamb, or goat as a sacrifice had to bring it to the door of the Tent of Meeting rather than offer it in the open field. The priest would sprinkle the blood on Yahweh's altar and burn the fat for a pleasant aroma. The reason is stated plainly: so that they would no more sacrifice their sacrifices to the goat idols.
The chapter then forbids eating blood, for both the native Israelite and the foreigner living among them. Even blood from a hunted animal had to be poured out and covered with dust. Verse 11 is the heart of the chapter: For the life of the flesh is in the blood. I have given it to you on the altar to make atonement for your souls. Blood represented life, and life belongs to God.
This verse helps explain the whole sacrificial system. A life was given so that a guilty life could be spared. Hebrews 9:22 adds that apart from shedding of blood there is no remission. When the New Testament speaks of being redeemed by the precious blood of Christ (1 Peter 1:19), it means that Jesus gave His very life in our place.
