Leviticus 17 · Grade 4
Life Belongs to God
Read and Think
Leviticus 17 is about where and how Israel offered sacrifices. Every animal offered had to be brought to the door of the Tent of Meeting. There the priest sprinkled the blood on the altar. This guarded Israel from offering sacrifices to goat idols, as some of the nations did.
God also forbade eating blood, for Israelites and for foreigners living among them. Verse 11 explains: For the life of the flesh is in the blood. God gave it on the altar to make atonement for their souls. Life belongs to God, so blood was treated with respect.
Hebrews 9:22 says that without the shedding of blood there is no forgiveness. This is why the New Testament speaks so often of the blood of Jesus. His life was given in place of ours.
