Leviticus 16 · Grade 3
Once a Year
Read the Story
The Day of Atonement came once a year. Only on this day could the high priest go behind the veil into the Most Holy Place. He took off his fancy clothes and wore plain linen. First he offered a bull for his own sins.
Then he took two goats. He cast lots to choose. One goat was a sin offering for the people. Its blood was sprinkled on the mercy seat. The other goat was the scapegoat. Aaron laid both hands on its head and confessed the sins of Israel.
A man led the scapegoat into the wilderness and let it go. The goat shall carry all their iniquities. On that day the people were clean from all their sins. Hebrews says Jesus entered heaven once for all to take away sin.
Memory Verse
“The goat shall carry all their iniquities on himself to a solitary land, and he shall release the goat in the wilderness.”
