Coming Back Home

Name Date

Read the Story

Some people had a sickness of the skin. They had to live outside the camp. But what if they got well?

The priest went out of the camp to see them. He used two birds, cedar wood, red yarn, and a plant called hyssop. One bird was set free. It flew away into the open field.

The person washed his clothes and took a bath. Then he could come back into the camp. On the eighth day he brought gifts to God. God was glad to welcome him home.

Memory Verse

“He who is to be cleansed shall wash his clothes, and shave off all his hair, and bathe himself in water; and he shall be clean. After that he shall come into the camp, but shall dwell outside his tent seven days.

The Day of Cleansing

Name Date

Read the Story

Leviticus 14 is the law of the leper in the day of his cleansing. The priest went outside the camp to look. If the person was healed, the priest took two living clean birds, cedar wood, scarlet, and hyssop.

One bird was killed over running water. The living bird was dipped and then let go into the open field. The healed person washed his clothes, shaved, and bathed. Then he could come into the camp, though he stayed outside his tent seven days.

On the eighth day he brought lambs, flour, and oil. The priest put blood and oil on his right ear, thumb, and big toe. If he was poor, he could bring one lamb and two birds. The chapter also tells how to cleanse a house with mildew.

Memory Verse

“He who is to be cleansed shall wash his clothes, and shave off all his hair, and bathe himself in water; and he shall be clean. After that he shall come into the camp, but shall dwell outside his tent seven days.

Restored to the Community

Name Date

Read and Think

Leviticus 13 told how a person with skin disease was separated. Leviticus 14 shows the joyful way back. When the disease was healed, the priest went outside the camp to the person. God did not wait for the healed person to find his own way back.

The priest took two clean birds, cedar wood, scarlet yarn, and hyssop. One bird was offered over running water, and the living bird was dipped and released into the open field. The person washed, shaved, and bathed, and then came into the camp.

On the eighth day he brought offerings, and the priest made atonement for him. The poor could bring less, so no one was shut out. When Jesus healed lepers, He told them to show themselves to the priest. He wanted them fully restored to their families and worship.

Leviticus 14 · Grade 5

The Way Back In

Name Date

Read and Think

Leviticus 14 opens with good news: This shall be the law of the leper in the day of his cleansing. The priest went out of the camp, examined the person, and if the disease was healed, began the ceremony of restoration. Notice that the priest went out to him. God's law made the first move toward the outsider.

The priest took two living clean birds, cedar wood, scarlet, and hyssop. One bird was killed in an earthen vessel over running water. The living bird, with the cedar, scarlet, and hyssop, was dipped in its blood, the person was sprinkled seven times, and then the priest let the living bird go into the open field. The healed person washed his clothes, shaved, bathed, and returned to the camp, waiting seven more days before entering his tent.

On the eighth day he brought two male lambs, a ewe lamb, fine flour, and oil. The priest placed blood and then oil on his right ear, right thumb, and right big toe, the same pattern used when priests were ordained. If he was poor, he could bring one lamb and two birds. The chapter closes with instructions for houses with mildew. When Jesus healed ten lepers in Luke 17, He sent them to the priests, and one returned to give thanks.
