The Priest Takes a Look

Name Date

Read the Story

God told Moses and Aaron about a sickness of the skin. If a person had a spot on his skin, he went to the priest. The priest looked at it.

Sometimes the priest waited seven days to look again. If the spot was not bad, the person was clean. If it was the sickness, he had to live outside the camp.

Living apart was hard. But God did not forget sick people. Many years later, Jesus met a man with this sickness. Jesus touched him and made him clean.

Clean or Unclean

Name Date

Read the Story

Leviticus 13 tells how the priest checked skin problems. If someone had a swelling, a scab, or a bright spot, he was brought to Aaron or one of the priests. The priest looked closely at the skin and the hair.

If the priest was not sure, he isolated the person for seven days and then looked again. Some spots faded, and the priest said the person was clean. Others spread, and the priest said it was leprosy, a serious skin disease.

A person with the disease wore torn clothes and lived outside the camp. The priests also checked clothing that had mildew. In the Gospels, a man with leprosy knelt before Jesus. Jesus touched him, and he was healed. Jesus cares for people others keep away from.

Leviticus 13 · Grade 4

A Careful Priest

Name Date

Read and Think

Leviticus 13 gives the priests careful steps for checking skin diseases. The Hebrew word, often translated leprosy, covered several skin conditions. The priest examined the spot, looked at whether the hair had turned white, and checked whether it went deeper than the skin.

When the signs were unclear, the person was isolated for seven days and checked again, sometimes twice. The priest did not guess. Many people were declared clean. But when the disease was present, the person had to live outside the camp and call out that he was unclean, so others would not come into contact.

This was hard for those who were sick, and it protected the whole camp where God lived. The priests also examined garments with mildew. In Mark 1, Jesus did what no priest could do. He touched a man with leprosy, and the man was made clean. Jesus does not stay away from those who are hurting.

Leviticus 13 · Grade 5

Clean and Unclean in the Camp

Name Date

Read and Think

Leviticus 13 is a long chapter of instructions for the priests. When a person had a rising, a scab, or a bright spot on the skin, he was brought to Aaron or to one of his sons. The priest examined the spot: Had the hair turned white? Did it look deeper than the skin? Was it spreading? The Hebrew term, often translated leprosy, covered a range of skin conditions, so we should not assume it meant only the modern disease.

When the signs were unclear, the priest isolated the person seven days and examined him again. If the spot had faded, the priest pronounced him clean. Burns, boils, and even ordinary baldness are discussed, and many were declared clean. When the disease was confirmed, the person wore torn clothes, covered his upper lip, and cried out a warning. His dwelling shall be outside of the camp.

The same careful examination was used for garments with mildew or mold. Living outside the camp was painful, yet it guarded the holiness of the camp where God dwelt among His people. In Mark 1 a man with leprosy came to Jesus and said, If you want to, you can make me clean. Jesus, moved with compassion, touched him and healed him. The holiness that once required separation now reached out to restore.
