God's Food Rules

Name Date

Read the Story

God told His people which animals they could eat. They could eat animals with a split hoof that chew the cud. A cow and a sheep are like that.

In the water, they could eat fish with fins and scales. Some birds were not for food. They could eat some bugs, like locusts.

God said, be holy, for I am holy. These rules showed that Israel belonged to God. In the New Testament, Jesus taught that food does not make a person unclean (Mark 7:18-19). But God still wants us to be holy.

Leviticus 11 · Grade 3

Clean and Unclean

Name Date

Read the Story

God gave Moses and Aaron rules about food. On land, Israel could eat animals that part the hoof and chew the cud. The camel, the hare, and the pig were unclean for them because they did not have both.

In the water, they could eat anything with fins and scales. God named birds they should not eat, like the eagle and the owl. Most flying insects were unclean, but they could eat locusts and grasshoppers.

God gave the reason at the end. I am Yahweh who brought you up out of the land of Egypt, to be your God. You shall therefore be holy, for I am holy. The food rules set Israel apart. In the New Testament, Jesus made all foods clean, but God still calls His people to be holy.

Memory Verse

Leviticus 11 · Grade 4

Be Holy, for I Am Holy

Name Date

Read and Think

Leviticus 11 gives Israel rules about clean and unclean animals. Land animals with a split hoof that chew the cud were clean. Water creatures with fins and scales were clean. Certain birds and most swarming creatures were unclean, though some insects like locusts could be eaten.

Touching the carcass of an unclean animal made a person unclean until the evening. Clothes had to be washed. These rules reached into everyday life, reminding Israel that every part of life belonged to God.

God explained why: For I am Yahweh your God. Sanctify yourselves therefore, and be holy; for I am holy. The food laws set Israel apart from the nations. Jesus later declared all foods clean, and Peter learned the gospel is for all nations. Yet God's call to be holy is repeated in First Peter for every believer.

  2. How long was a person unclean after touching a carcass?

  3. What did the rules remind Israel?

  4. Who declared all foods clean?

Leviticus 11 · Grade 5

Holiness in Everyday Life

Name Date

Read and Think

In Leviticus 11, God gave Moses and Aaron detailed rules about which animals Israel could eat. On land, clean animals part the hoof, are cloven-footed, and chew the cud. The camel, the hyrax, the hare, and the pig failed one of these tests and were unclean. In the water, creatures with fins and scales were clean. Among birds, many such as eagles, vultures, and owls were forbidden.

Most flying insects were unclean, but locusts, crickets, and grasshoppers were allowed. Touching the carcass of an unclean animal made a person unclean until evening. The rules touched kitchens, pots, and clothing. People today sometimes guess at health reasons, but the chapter itself gives a different reason.

The reason is God's holiness: For I am Yahweh who brought you up out of the land of Egypt, to be your God. You shall therefore be holy, for I am holy. The laws marked Israel as God's own people. In Mark 7 Jesus declared all foods clean, and in Acts 10 God showed Peter that the gospel is for every nation. First Peter 1 repeats the call: be holy in all your behavior.

Show What You Know

  1. What three tests made a land animal clean?

  2. Name two forbidden birds.

  3. Which insects were allowed?

  4. What reason does the chapter itself give for these laws?

  5. What did Jesus declare in Mark 7?
