God Is Holy

Name Date

Read the Story

Aaron had two sons named Nadab and Abihu. They were priests. They put fire and incense in their pans. But God did not tell them to do this.

Fire came out from God, and they died. Moses said that God will be shown holy by those who come near Him. Aaron was very sad, but he was quiet.

God told the priests to know what is holy and what is not. They had to teach the people God's rules. God is holy and good. We can come near Him the way He shows us. In the New Testament, Jesus says He is the way (John 14:6).

Memory Verse

Fire God Did Not Command

Name Date

Read the Story

Nadab and Abihu were sons of Aaron. They took their censers, put fire in them, and laid incense on it. They offered strange fire before the Lord, which He had not commanded them. Fire came out from before the Lord and they died.

Moses told Aaron that God had said He would show Himself holy to those who come near Him. Aaron held his peace. He did not say anything. Their cousins carried the two men out of the camp.

God then spoke to Aaron. Priests must not drink wine when they go into the Tent of Meeting. They must make a distinction between the holy and the common, and teach the people God's statutes. God is holy, and He wanted His priests to honor Him carefully.

Leviticus 10 · Grade 4

Honoring God's Holiness

Name Date

Read and Think

On the very day God's glory appeared, something sad happened. Nadab and Abihu, sons of Aaron, offered strange fire before Yahweh, which He had not commanded. Fire came out from before Yahweh and consumed them. The Bible does not give every detail, but it is clear they did not worship God the way He said.

Moses said God had spoken: I will show myself holy to those who come near me. Aaron held his peace. God told the priests not to mourn in the usual way while serving. He also told them not to drink wine or strong drink before entering the tent.

The priests had an important job. They were to make a distinction between the holy and the common, and teach God's people His statutes. God is holy, and worship matters to Him. Through Jesus, we can come near God boldly, not by our own ideas, but by the way God has made.

  3. What did God tell the priests not to drink?

Leviticus 10 · Grade 5

Holy Fear and Holy Joy

Name Date

Read and Think

Leviticus 10 follows the joyful scene of chapter 9 with a sobering one. Nadab and Abihu, the sons of Aaron, each took his censer, put fire in it, laid incense on it, and offered strange fire before Yahweh, which he had not commanded them. Fire came out from before Yahweh and devoured them. The text does not explain everything, so we should not add our own guesses. It simply shows that they acted against God's command.

Moses explained: This is what Yahweh spoke of, saying, I will show myself holy to those who come near me, and before all the people I will be glorified. Aaron held his peace. Their relatives carried the bodies out of the camp. God then commanded the priests not to drink wine or strong drink when entering the tent, so they could make a distinction between the holy and the common and teach Israel His statutes.

At the end of the chapter, Moses was upset that the sin offering had not been eaten. Aaron explained his grief, and when Moses heard that, it was pleasing in his sight. God's holiness is serious, but His people are not left without hope. Hebrews 12 says to offer service pleasing to God with reverence and awe. Through Jesus, the great High Priest, we may draw near with confidence.
