Leviticus 10 · Grade 5

Holy Fear and Holy Joy

Name Date

Read and Think

Leviticus 10 follows the joyful scene of chapter 9 with a sobering one. Nadab and Abihu, the sons of Aaron, each took his censer, put fire in it, laid incense on it, and offered strange fire before Yahweh, which he had not commanded them. Fire came out from before Yahweh and devoured them. The text does not explain everything, so we should not add our own guesses. It simply shows that they acted against God's command.

Moses explained: This is what Yahweh spoke of, saying, I will show myself holy to those who come near me, and before all the people I will be glorified. Aaron held his peace. Their relatives carried the bodies out of the camp. God then commanded the priests not to drink wine or strong drink when entering the tent, so they could make a distinction between the holy and the common and teach Israel His statutes.

At the end of the chapter, Moses was upset that the sin offering had not been eaten. Aaron explained his grief, and when Moses heard that, it was pleasing in his sight. God's holiness is serious, but His people are not left without hope. Hebrews 12 says to offer service pleasing to God with reverence and awe. Through Jesus, the great High Priest, we may draw near with confidence.
