God Shows the Way

Read the Story

God called to Moses from the Tent of Meeting. He told Moses how His people could bring a gift to Him. It was called a burnt offering.

A man could bring a bull, a sheep, or a goat. It had to be a male with no defect. That means it had no hurt or spot. A poor man could bring a dove or a young pigeon.

The man put his hand on the head of the animal. Then the priest put it on the fire on the altar. God said it was a sweet smell to Him. God was glad to have His people come near.

Memory Verse

“He shall lay his hand on the head of the burnt offering, and it shall be accepted for him to make atonement for him.”

A Sweet Smell to the Lord

Name Date

Read the Story

The Lord called to Moses from the Tent of Meeting. He gave rules for the burnt offering. A person could bring an animal from the herd or from the flock. It had to be a male without defect.

The person brought it to the door of the Tent of Meeting. He laid his hand on its head. God said it would be accepted for him, to make atonement for him. Atonement means God makes a way to cover sin and bring people near.

The priests put wood and fire on the altar. The whole offering was burned there. Even birds, like turtledoves or young pigeons, could be brought. Each one was a pleasant aroma to the Lord. Rich or poor, anyone could come to God.

Memory Verse

Drawing Near to a Holy God

Name Date

Read and Think

Leviticus begins with God speaking to Moses from the Tent of Meeting. God had come to live among His people in the tabernacle. Now He showed them how sinful people could come near a holy God. The first offering He describes is the burnt offering.

A worshiper could bring a bull, a sheep, a goat, or a bird. The animal had to be a male without defect. The worshiper laid his hand on its head. This showed that the animal stood in his place. God said it would be accepted for him to make atonement.

The priests arranged the wood and the pieces on the altar, and the whole offering was burned. It rose as a pleasant aroma to the Lord. These offerings pointed ahead to Jesus. He gave Himself once for all, so that everyone who trusts Him is accepted by God.

Leviticus 1 · Grade 5

The Whole Offering

Name Date

Read and Think

The book of Leviticus opens where Exodus ended. God's glory had filled the tabernacle, and now the Lord called to Moses from the Tent of Meeting. He began teaching Israel how to worship Him. The first teaching was about the burnt offering, where the whole animal was given to God.

The offering could come from the herd, the flock, or the birds. A bull or a sheep or a goat had to be a male without defect, brought to the door of the Tent of Meeting so it would be accepted before the Lord. The worshiper laid his hand on its head, and it was accepted for him to make atonement for him. Turtledoves and young pigeons meant that a poor person was welcome too.

The priests sprinkled the blood around the altar and arranged the pieces on the wood. Everything was burned, an offering made by fire, of a pleasant aroma to the Lord. The New Testament says Christ gave Himself up for us, an offering and a sacrifice to God for a sweet-smelling fragrance (Ephesians 5:2). The old offerings were repeated again and again, but Jesus offered Himself once, and His sacrifice is enough.

Show What You Know

  1. Where did the Lord call to Moses from?

  2. Why was this called a burnt offering, or whole offering?

  3. What did laying a hand on the head mean?

  4. What do the turtledoves and pigeons show about God?

  5. How is Jesus different from the old offerings?
