Leviticus 1 · Grade 5
The Whole Offering
Read and Think
The book of Leviticus opens where Exodus ended. God's glory had filled the tabernacle, and now the Lord called to Moses from the Tent of Meeting. He began teaching Israel how to worship Him. The first teaching was about the burnt offering, where the whole animal was given to God.
The offering could come from the herd, the flock, or the birds. A bull or a sheep or a goat had to be a male without defect, brought to the door of the Tent of Meeting so it would be accepted before the Lord. The worshiper laid his hand on its head, and it was accepted for him to make atonement for him. Turtledoves and young pigeons meant that a poor person was welcome too.
The priests sprinkled the blood around the altar and arranged the pieces on the wood. Everything was burned, an offering made by fire, of a pleasant aroma to the Lord. The New Testament says Christ gave Himself up for us, an offering and a sacrifice to God for a sweet-smelling fragrance (Ephesians 5:2). The old offerings were repeated again and again, but Jesus offered Himself once, and His sacrifice is enough.
