Too Many Men

Name Date

Read the Story

Gideon had a big army. But God said Gideon had too many men. Israel might brag that they saved themselves. So God told Gideon to send home all who were afraid. Many went home.

Then God told Gideon to take them to the water. Most knelt down to drink. Three hundred men lapped water from their hands. God said He would save Israel with these three hundred.

At night Gideon heard a man tell a dream. A loaf of barley bread rolled into the camp and knocked a tent down. His men blew trumpets and broke jars with torches inside. The enemy army ran away.

Memory Verse

Yahweh said to Gideon, “I will save you by the three hundred men who lapped, and deliver the Midianites into your hand. Let all the other people go, each to his own place.”

God Wins With Three Hundred

Name Date

Read the Story

Gideon camped with thirty-two thousand men. God said there were too many. Israel might brag, My own hand has saved me. Gideon told the fearful to go home, and twenty-two thousand left.

God tested the ten thousand at the water. Three hundred lapped water with their hands to their mouths. God said He would save Israel by these three hundred.

God let Gideon hear a Midianite's dream. A cake of barley bread tumbled into the camp and turned a tent upside down. His friend said it meant the sword of Gideon. Gideon worshiped. He gave each man a trumpet and an empty pitcher with a torch inside. They blew, broke the pitchers, and shouted. All the army ran.

So No One Could Boast

Name Date

Read and Think

Gideon gathered thirty-two thousand men against Midian. Yahweh said the army was too large, because Israel would boast that their own hand had saved them. Twenty-two thousand fearful men went home. Then God had the remaining ten thousand drink at the water, and only three hundred lapped with their hands to their mouths.

God knew Gideon was still afraid. He told him to go down to the camp with his servant Purah. There Gideon heard a man tell a dream about a cake of barley bread that rolled into the camp and flattened a tent. His friend said it meant God had given Midian into Gideon's hand. Gideon bowed in worship.

Gideon divided the three hundred into three companies with trumpets and empty pitchers holding torches. At the middle watch of the night, they blew trumpets, broke pitchers, held up torches, and shouted, The sword of Yahweh and of Gideon! Each man stood in his place, and the Midianite army ran. Yahweh set the enemies against each other, and Israel chased them.

Judges 7 · Grade 5

Weakness and God's Power

Name Date

Read and Think

Gideon's army camped by the spring of Harod with thirty-two thousand men. God said the number was too large: Israel would brag that their own hand had saved them. Gideon let the fearful go home, and twenty-two thousand left. At the water, God separated out three hundred who lapped with their hands. Against an army as many as locusts, God would save by those few.

God also cared for Gideon's fear. He invited Gideon to go down to the camp with Purah, and there Gideon overheard a dream: a cake of barley bread tumbled into Midian's camp and turned a tent upside down. The listener explained that God had delivered Midian into Gideon's hand. Gideon worshiped and returned with confidence.

The plan used no ordinary weapons. Three companies carried trumpets and pitchers with torches inside. At the beginning of the middle watch, they blew the trumpets, broke the pitchers, and cried, The sword of Yahweh and of Gideon! Each man stood in his place while the enemy ran. Yahweh set every man's sword against his fellow, and Ephraim captured the Midianite princes Oreb and Zeeb. In the New Testament, Hebrews names Gideon among people of faith who from weakness were made strong (Hebrews 11:32-34).
