Gideon gave the angel food. Fire came out of the rock and burned it up. Gideon built an altar. He called it Yahweh is Peace. Then he put wool on the floor. He asked God for a sign. God made the wool wet and the ground dry. Then God made the wool dry and the ground wet.

Israel did evil, and Midian ruled them for seven years. The Midianites came like locusts and destroyed the crops. Israel hid in caves and cried to God.

Gideon was beating out wheat in a wine press to hide it. Yahweh's angel said, Yahweh is with you, you mighty man of valor! Gideon asked why so much trouble had come. God told him to go and save Israel.

The angel touched Gideon's meat and cakes with his staff, and fire came out of the rock. Gideon built an altar named Yahweh is Peace. That night he tore down his father's altar to Baal. God Calls the Fearful

Name Date

Read and Think

After forty years of rest, Israel did evil again. Midian, Amalek, and the people of the east swarmed into the land like locusts, destroying crops and livestock. For seven years Israel hid in caves. A prophet reminded them that God had brought them from Egypt, but they had not listened.

Gideon was threshing wheat in a wine press so the Midianites would not find it. Yahweh's angel greeted him as a mighty man of valor. Gideon said his clan was the weakest and he was the least in his father's house. God answered that He would be with him.

Gideon brought an offering, and fire from the rock consumed it. Afraid, he heard God say, Peace be to you. He built an altar called Yahweh is Peace. That night he tore down his father's altar to Baal, and his father defended him, naming him Jerubbaal. Finally Gideon tested God twice with a fleece, and both times God gave the sign.

Judges 6 · Grade 5

Peace in the Middle of Fear

Name Date

Read and Think

Seven years of Midianite raids left Israel poor and hiding in mountain dens. When they cried to Yahweh, He first sent a prophet to explain the cause: God had delivered them from Egypt and told them not to fear the gods of the Amorites, but they had not obeyed His voice.

Yahweh's angel found Gideon beating out wheat in a wine press. When greeted as a mighty man of valor, Gideon asked hard questions: if Yahweh is with us, why has all this happened, and where are His wonders? God did not argue. He said, Go in this your might, and save Israel. Haven't I sent you? When Gideon pointed to his weakness, God promised, Surely I will be with you.

Fire from the rock consumed Gideon's offering, and he feared he would die for seeing Yahweh's angel. God spoke peace, and Gideon named his altar Yahweh is Peace. His first task was at home: he pulled down his father's altar to Baal and cut down the Asherah. When the town wanted him dead, his father Joash said Baal should defend himself. When Midian gathered, Yahweh's Spirit came on Gideon. Still unsure, Gideon asked for the fleece to be wet, then dry, and God patiently answered both times.

Show What You Know

  1. What did the prophet say was the cause of Israel's trouble?

  2. What hard questions did Gideon ask?

  3. What was Gideon's first task?

  4. What did Joash say about Baal?
