Judges 6 · Grade 5
Peace in the Middle of Fear
Read and Think
Seven years of Midianite raids left Israel poor and hiding in mountain dens. When they cried to Yahweh, He first sent a prophet to explain the cause: God had delivered them from Egypt and told them not to fear the gods of the Amorites, but they had not obeyed His voice.
Yahweh's angel found Gideon beating out wheat in a wine press. When greeted as a mighty man of valor, Gideon asked hard questions: if Yahweh is with us, why has all this happened, and where are His wonders? God did not argue. He said, Go in this your might, and save Israel. Haven't I sent you? When Gideon pointed to his weakness, God promised, Surely I will be with you.
Fire from the rock consumed Gideon's offering, and he feared he would die for seeing Yahweh's angel. God spoke peace, and Gideon named his altar Yahweh is Peace. His first task was at home: he pulled down his father's altar to Baal and cut down the Asherah. When the town wanted him dead, his father Joash said Baal should defend himself. When Midian gathered, Yahweh's Spirit came on Gideon. Still unsure, Gideon asked for the fleece to be wet, then dry, and God patiently answered both times.
