On the day of the victory, Deborah and Barak sang to Yahweh. They praised God. The leaders led, and the people offered themselves willingly.

The song praises Zebulun and Naphtali. They risked their lives. It asks why Reuben, Dan, and Asher stayed away. The stars fought from the sky, and the river Kishon swept the enemy away. The song ends with a prayer. Those who love God will be like the sun when it rises.

Remembering With a Song

Name Date

Read and Think

After God's victory, Deborah and Barak sang a song. Songs helped Israel remember what God had done. The song blesses Yahweh. The leaders took the lead, and the people offered themselves willingly.

The song tells how Yahweh came from Seir. The earth trembled and the mountains quaked. Before the victory, life in Israel was dangerous. The villages were empty. Then Deborah arose as a mother in Israel.

Some tribes answered the call and some did not. Zebulun and Naphtali risked their lives. Reuben stayed among the sheepfolds, and others stayed by the sea. The stars fought from their courses, and the river Kishon swept away the enemy. The song also retells Jael's deed and pictures Sisera's mother waiting at a window for a son who would not come. It ends with a prayer that those who love God be like the rising sun.

Judges 5 · Grade 5

Praise That Tells the Story

Name Date

Read and Think

Judges 5 retells chapter 4 as praise, giving God the glory for the victory. It opens by blessing Yahweh because Israel's leaders took the lead and the people volunteered willingly, and it calls kings and princes to listen as Deborah sings to the God of Israel.

The poem pictures Yahweh marching from Seir and Edom as the earth trembled and the clouds poured water. Before this, in the days of Shamgar and Jael, the highways were deserted, the villages ceased, and Israel chose new gods. Then Deborah arose as a mother in Israel. The song names the tribes who came, such as Ephraim, Benjamin, Zebulun, Issachar, and Naphtali, and it rebukes Reuben, Gilead, Dan, and Asher, who stayed away.

Creation itself joins the battle: the stars fought from their courses and the ancient river Kishon swept the enemy away. Meroz is cursed for not coming to help Yahweh. Jael is called blessed for what she did to Sisera, and the song ends with a picture of Sisera's mother waiting in vain. The final line is a prayer: let God's enemies perish, but let those who love Him be like the sun rising in its strength. The land had rest forty years.
