A king named Jabin was mean to Israel for twenty years. His captain, Sisera, had nine hundred iron chariots. The people cried to God.

Deborah was a prophet. She judged Israel under a palm tree. She called Barak. She said God wanted him to go to Mount Tabor with ten thousand men. Barak said he would go if she went with him. Deborah said yes. But she said a woman would get the honor.

Deborah told Barak to go, because God had gone before him. God mixed up Sisera's army. Sisera ran away on foot. He hid in the tent of a woman named Jael. Jael beat Sisera there. God won the fight for Israel that day.

This Is the Day

Name Date

Read the Story

Israel did evil again after Ehud died. So Jabin king of Canaan ruled them for twenty years. His captain was Sisera, who had nine hundred chariots of iron.

Deborah, a prophetess, judged Israel under Deborah's palm tree. She called Barak. She told him God's command. He must take ten thousand men to Mount Tabor. God would bring Sisera to the river Kishon. Barak would not go unless Deborah went too. She went. But she said God would sell Sisera into a woman's hand.

Deborah said, Go; for this is the day in which Yahweh has delivered Sisera into your hand. Yahweh confused Sisera's army, and Sisera fled on foot. He ran to Jael's tent. Jael defeated Sisera in her tent. So God subdued Jabin that day.

Memory Verse

Courage From God's Word

Name Date

Read and Think

After Ehud died, Israel did evil again, and Yahweh sold them to Jabin king of Canaan. For twenty years his captain Sisera, with nine hundred chariots of iron, oppressed them. Israel cried to Yahweh.

Deborah was a prophetess who judged Israel under a palm tree between Ramah and Bethel. She told Barak that God commanded him to gather ten thousand men at Mount Tabor, and God would deliver Sisera to him at the Kishon. Barak agreed only if Deborah came along. She went, but said the honor would go to a woman.

On the day of battle Deborah said Yahweh had gone out before Barak. Yahweh confused Sisera and his chariots, and every soldier fell. Sisera fled to the tent of Jael, Heber's wife. She gave him milk and covered him, and while he slept she drove a tent peg through his temple. That day God subdued Jabin. In the New Testament, Hebrews names Barak with Gideon, Samson, and Jephthah among people of faith (Hebrews 11:32).

Judges 4 · Grade 5

God Gives the Victory

Name Date

Read and Think

When Ehud died, Israel again did evil, and Yahweh sold them into the hand of Jabin king of Canaan, who reigned in Hazor. His commander Sisera had nine hundred chariots of iron, and he mightily oppressed Israel for twenty years.

Deborah, a prophetess, was judging Israel, and people came to her under her palm tree for judgment. She summoned Barak from Kedesh Naphtali and reminded him of God's command to lead ten thousand men to Mount Tabor. Barak answered that he would go only if she went with him. Deborah agreed but warned that the journey would not be for his honor, because Yahweh would sell Sisera into a woman's hand.

Deborah declared that this was the day of victory, and Barak went down the mountain. Yahweh confused Sisera's army, and not one man was left. Sisera escaped on foot to the tent of Jael, the wife of Heber the Kenite, because his king was at peace with Heber's house. Jael welcomed him, gave him milk, and then killed him with a tent peg while he slept. The chapter ends by saying God subdued Jabin. In the New Testament, Hebrews names Barak among those who through faith subdued kingdoms (Hebrews 11:32-33).

  1. Where did Jabin reign?

  2. How many chariots of iron did Sisera have?

  3. What warning did Deborah give Barak?

  4. Why did Sisera flee to Jael's tent?
