Judges 4 · Grade 5
God Gives the Victory
Read and Think
When Ehud died, Israel again did evil, and Yahweh sold them into the hand of Jabin king of Canaan, who reigned in Hazor. His commander Sisera had nine hundred chariots of iron, and he mightily oppressed Israel for twenty years.
Deborah, a prophetess, was judging Israel, and people came to her under her palm tree for judgment. She summoned Barak from Kedesh Naphtali and reminded him of God's command to lead ten thousand men to Mount Tabor. Barak answered that he would go only if she went with him. Deborah agreed but warned that the journey would not be for his honor, because Yahweh would sell Sisera into a woman's hand.
Deborah declared that this was the day of victory, and Barak went down the mountain. Yahweh confused Sisera's army, and not one man was left. Sisera escaped on foot to the tent of Jael, the wife of Heber the Kenite, because his king was at peace with Heber's house. Jael welcomed him, gave him milk, and then killed him with a tent peg while he slept. The chapter ends by saying God subdued Jabin. In the New Testament, Hebrews names Barak among those who through faith subdued kingdoms (Hebrews 11:32-33).

Memory Verse
“Deborah said to Barak, “Go; for this is the day in which Yahweh has delivered Sisera into your hand. Hasn’t Yahweh gone out before you?” So Barak went down from Mount Tabor, and ten thousand men after him.”
