Israel did evil. They forgot God. So a king from far away ruled them for eight years. Then they cried to God. God sent Othniel. God's Spirit came on him. He saved them. The land had rest for forty years.

Israel did evil again. Eglon, the king of Moab, ruled them for eighteen years. They cried to God. God sent Ehud. Ehud was left-handed.

God used Ehud to beat the king of Moab. Then the land had rest for eighty years. After that, God used Shamgar to save Israel too.

God Hears and Saves

Name Date

Read the Story

God left some nations in the land to test Israel. Israel married their people and served their gods. So God let Cushan Rishathaim, king of Mesopotamia, rule them for eight years.

When they cried to Yahweh, He raised up Othniel. Yahweh's Spirit came on him. He won, and the land had rest forty years.

Again Israel did evil, and Eglon king of Moab ruled them eighteen years. God raised up Ehud, a left-handed man from Benjamin. Ehud brought a gift to Eglon. God used Ehud to defeat him, and Moab was beaten. The land had rest eighty years. Then Shamgar saved Israel from the Philistines with an ox goad.

Unlikely Saviors

Name Date

Read and Think

God left certain nations in Canaan to test Israel and to teach war to a generation that had never fought. Instead of standing apart, Israel married into those nations and served their gods. God sold them into the hand of Cushan Rishathaim for eight years.

When Israel cried to Yahweh, He raised up Othniel, Caleb's relative. Yahweh's Spirit came on him, he judged Israel, and the land had rest forty years. Then Israel did evil again, and Eglon of Moab ruled them for eighteen years.

God raised up Ehud, a left-handed Benjamite. Ehud made a short sword and hid it on his right thigh. He brought tribute to Eglon, asked to speak with him alone, and killed him. Ehud then led Israel to victory over Moab, and the land had rest eighty years. After him, Shamgar struck six hundred Philistines with an ox goad.

  2. How long did the land rest under Othniel?

Judges 3 · Grade 5

Crying Out to God

Name Date

Read and Think

The nations left in Canaan served as a test of whether Israel would obey the commandments God gave through Moses. Israel failed the test: they intermarried with the Canaanites and served the Baals and the Asheroth. Yahweh's anger burned, and He sold them to Cushan Rishathaim, king of Mesopotamia.

The first judge shows the pattern clearly. Israel cried out, Yahweh raised up a savior, His Spirit came on Othniel, and Othniel prevailed. The land had rest forty years. But when Israel did evil again, God strengthened Eglon king of Moab against them, and he took the city of palm trees.

Ehud, a left-handed Benjamite, carried Israel's tribute to Eglon with a hidden sword. Alone with the king, he said he had a message from God and struck him. Ehud escaped, blew the trumpet in Ephraim, and Israel held the fords of the Jordan and defeated Moab. The land had rest eighty years. Shamgar also saved Israel, striking six hundred Philistines with an ox goad.

Show What You Know

  1. What did the remaining nations test?

  2. What four steps does Othniel's story show?

  3. Who strengthened Eglon against Israel?

  4. What did Ehud do after he escaped?

  5. How long did the land rest after Ehud?
