A Sad Ending

Name Date

Read the Story

After the war, the people came to Bethel. They cried loudly. They asked God why one tribe was missing from Israel. They built an altar and gave gifts to God.

Before the war, the men had made a promise. They said they would not let their daughters marry men of Benjamin. Now they were sorry. Only six hundred men of Benjamin were left. Israel did more wrong things to try to fix it. They took young women for Benjamin without asking.

Then everyone went home to his own land. The book of Judges ends this way. In those days there was no king in Israel. Everyone did what was right in his own eyes. Israel needed to follow God.

Fixing Wrong With Wrong

Name Date

Read the Story

The men of Israel had sworn at Mizpah, None of us will give his daughter to Benjamin as a wife. After the war, they came to Bethel and wept severely. They asked, Yahweh, the God of Israel, why has this happened in Israel, that there should be one tribe lacking in Israel today?

They grieved for Benjamin their brother. But they did not want to break their promise. So they made more foolish plans. They took four hundred young women from the town of Jabesh Gilead, which had not come to Mizpah. That was not enough, so they told Benjamin to catch wives from the dancers at Shiloh.

These plans were wrong. Then the children of Israel went home, every man to his tribe. The book ends with these words: In those days there was no king in Israel. Everyone did that which was right in his own eyes.

When Everyone Does Right in His Own Eyes

Name Date

Read and Think

Israel had won the war, but at Bethel they wept severely. They had sworn not to give their daughters to Benjamin, and now only six hundred Benjamite men remained. The people asked Yahweh why one tribe was lacking in Israel, built an altar, and offered sacrifices. The chapter does not say they waited for an answer from God.

Instead, they made their own plans. They had also sworn that anyone who did not come to Mizpah would die. No one had come from Jabesh Gilead, so Israel attacked the town and took four hundred young women for Benjamin. When that was not enough, the elders told the Benjamites to hide in the vineyards at the yearly feast in Shiloh and seize young women who came out to dance.

These plans kept the letter of their oath but caused great harm to many families. These plans were wrong. Then everyone went home. The book closes with the same words heard earlier: In those days there was no king in Israel. Everyone did that which was right in his own eyes. Judges ends by showing Israel's need for a faithful king who would lead them to follow God.

Judges 21 · Grade 5

The Need for a Faithful King

Name Date

Read and Think

Judges ends in sorrow. Israel came to Bethel and wept severely: Yahweh, the God of Israel, why has this happened in Israel, that there should be one tribe lacking in Israel today? Their own oaths had created the problem. At Mizpah they had sworn, None of us will give his daughter to Benjamin as a wife, and Benjamin had only six hundred surviving men. The chapter says the people grieved for Benjamin, because Yahweh had made a breach in the tribes.

The chapter does not say they sought God's guidance; the elders worked around their vows. A second oath had condemned anyone who did not come to Mizpah. Jabesh Gilead had sent no one, so twelve thousand men struck the town and took four hundred young virgins for Benjamin. Still short, the elders told the Benjamites to lie in wait in the vineyards during the yearly feast of Yahweh at Shiloh and catch the daughters who came out to dance, arguing that the fathers had not broken their oath because they had not given them.

The narrator does not praise these plans; they were wrong. Israel preserved a tribe by harming many innocent people, and then every man went to his own inheritance. The final verse repeats the theme of the whole closing section: In those days there was no king in Israel. Everyone did that which was right in his own eyes. The judges had brought temporary rescues, but the people's hearts remained unchanged. Judges leaves readers longing for a faithful king who would rule in God's way.

  2. What had created the problem?

  3. Why was Jabesh Gilead attacked?
