Brothers at War

Name Date

Read the Story

Israel gathered as one man at Mizpah. They came from Dan to Beersheba. The Levite told them what happened in Gibeah. The people said none of them would go home until they dealt with it.

Israel sent men to Benjamin. They said, Now therefore deliver up the men, the wicked fellows who are in Gibeah. But Benjamin would not listen. They gathered twenty-six thousand men. Seven hundred chosen men were left-handed. They could sling a stone at a hair.

Israel asked counsel of God at Bethel. Yahweh said, Judah first. Benjamin won the first day and the second. Then all Israel wept before Yahweh. They fasted until evening and offered burnt offerings. The ark of the covenant was there. Yahweh said, Go up; for tomorrow I will deliver him into your hand. Benjamin lost, and six hundred men fled to the rock of Rimmon.

Memory Verse

“Then all the children of Israel and all the people went up, and came to Bethel, and wept, and sat there before Yahweh, and fasted that day until evening; then they offered burnt offerings and peace offerings before Yahweh.”

Justice and Grief

Name Date

Read and Think

Now all Israel acted together, but against one of its own tribes. Four hundred thousand men gathered at Mizpah. They heard the Levite. They vowed not to go home until Gibeah was dealt with. They asked Benjamin to hand over the wicked men so that evil would be put away from Israel.

Benjamin refused to listen and defended Gibeah. Twenty-six thousand Benjamites gathered. Seven hundred were left-handed slingers who never missed. Israel asked God who should go first, and Yahweh said, Judah. On the first two days, Benjamin won, and Israel lost many men.

After the second defeat, all Israel went to Bethel. They wept, sat before Yahweh, and fasted until evening. They offered burnt offerings and peace offerings. Phinehas the priest stood before the ark. Israel asked, Shall I yet again go out to battle against the children of Benjamin my brother, or shall I cease? Yahweh said, Go up; tomorrow I will deliver him into your hand. On the third day Benjamin was defeated, and only six hundred men escaped to the rock of Rimmon.

Judges 20 · Grade 5

A Nation Divided

Name Date

Read and Think

The outrage at Gibeah united Israel from Dan to Beersheba, with the land of Gilead, as one man before Yahweh at Mizpah. Four hundred thousand footmen gathered. The Levite told his account, and the people resolved by lot to go up against Gibeah. They gave Benjamin a chance: deliver up the wicked fellows, that we may put away evil from Israel. Benjamin would not listen to the voice of their brothers.

Benjamin mustered twenty-six thousand swordsmen plus seven hundred chosen men of Gibeah; seven hundred left-handed men could sling a stone at a hair and not miss. Israel asked at Bethel who should go first, and Yahweh said, Judah first. On the first day, Benjamin destroyed twenty-two thousand men of Israel. Israel wept and asked again, and on the second day lost eighteen thousand more.

The repeated defeats humbled Israel. All the people came to Bethel, wept, sat before Yahweh, fasted until evening, and offered burnt offerings and peace offerings. The ark of the covenant was there, and Phinehas son of Eleazar, son of Aaron, served before it. This time Yahweh promised, Go up; for tomorrow I will deliver him into your hand. Using an ambush, Israel struck Benjamin; twenty-five thousand Benjamites fell, Israel struck their towns, and only six hundred men escaped to the rock of Rimmon, where they stayed four months.

  1. How many footmen gathered at Mizpah?

  2. What chance did Israel give Benjamin?

  3. How many did Israel lose on the first and second days?

  4. Who served before the ark?

  5. How long did the six hundred stay at the rock of Rimmon?

Think About It

  1. Israel was right to seek justice, yet the war nearly destroyed a whole tribe. Why is it important that justice be done in God's way?

  2. Only after weeping and fasting did God promise victory. What does this teach about humility before God?
