Joshua died. Then all the people of his time died too. A new group grew up. They did not know God. They did not know what He had done.

They served false gods called Baals. So their enemies beat them. They were very sad. God felt sorry for them. He sent leaders called judges to save them. But when a judge died, the people sinned again.

The Circle of Sin

Name Date

Read the Story

Yahweh's angel came from Gilgal to Bochim. He reminded Israel that God had brought them from Egypt and would never break His covenant. But they had made deals with the people of the land. So those nations would be like thorns to them.

The people served God while Joshua and the elders lived. Then another generation grew up who did not know Yahweh. They served the Baals and the Ashtaroth.

God let robbers and enemies defeat them. When the people groaned, God was moved. He raised up judges and was with each judge. But after the judge died, they turned back and did worse than their fathers.

A Generation That Forgot

Name Date

Read and Think

At Bochim, Yahweh's angel reminded Israel that God had kept His promise and brought them into the land. Israel had not kept their part, because they made covenants with the Canaanites and did not tear down their altars. The people wept and offered sacrifices.

Joshua died at one hundred ten years old. The people had served Yahweh while he and the elders who saw God's great works were alive. But the next generation did not know Yahweh or what He had done for Israel.

This chapter explains the pattern of the whole book. Israel worships idols, God hands them over to enemies, they groan in distress, and God raises up a judge to save them. When the judge dies, they turn back again.

Judges 2 · Grade 5

The Cycle of the Judges

Name Date

Read and Think

Chapter 2 is the key to the book of Judges. At Bochim the angel of Yahweh said God would never break His covenant, but Israel had made covenants with the people of the land and left their altars standing. So God would not drive those nations out; they would be thorns in Israel's sides and their gods a snare.

The people served Yahweh all the days of Joshua and of the elders who had seen His great work. But after that generation was gathered to their fathers, another generation arose who did not know Yahweh. Knowledge of God was not passed on, and they followed the Baals and the Ashtaroth.

The writer then describes a repeating cycle. Israel does evil, God's anger burns and enemies plunder them, the people groan, and God raises up a judge. Yahweh was with each judge, for it grieved Him because of their groaning. Yet each time the judge died, they corrupted themselves more than their fathers. God left the nations to test whether Israel would keep His way.

Show What You Know

  1. What would the nations become to Israel?

  2. Who served Yahweh faithfully?

  3. Why did the next generation turn away?

  4. Why did God raise up judges?

  5. Why did God leave the nations in the land?

Think About It

  1. The faith of one generation was not passed on to the next. What helps faith get passed on in a family or church?

  2. The cycle repeats with each judge. What sin patterns can people fall back into, and how does God's mercy break them?
