Judges 2 · Grade 5

The Cycle of the Judges

Name Date

Read and Think

Chapter 2 is the key to the book of Judges. At Bochim the angel of Yahweh said God would never break His covenant, but Israel had made covenants with the people of the land and left their altars standing. So God would not drive those nations out; they would be thorns in Israel's sides and their gods a snare.

The people served Yahweh all the days of Joshua and of the elders who had seen His great work. But after that generation was gathered to their fathers, another generation arose who did not know Yahweh. Knowledge of God was not passed on, and they followed the Baals and the Ashtaroth.

The writer then describes a repeating cycle. Israel does evil, God's anger burns and enemies plunder them, the people groan, and God raises up a judge. Yahweh was with each judge, for it grieved Him because of their groaning. Yet each time the judge died, they corrupted themselves more than their fathers. God left the nations to test whether Israel would keep His way.
