Read the Story

A man called a Levite traveled home from Bethlehem with his wife and his servant. When it got dark, they stopped in a town called Gibeah. They sat in the street. No one let them come into a house.

An old man came home from working in the field. He saw them. He said, Peace be to you! Don't sleep in the street. He took them into his house. He fed the donkeys. They washed their feet and ate.

But wicked men of the town came to the house. They hurt the Levite's wife very badly through the night. In the morning she lay at the door and did not answer. The Levite sent a message to all the tribes of Israel. People said nothing like it had happened since Egypt. This was very evil.

Wickedness in Gibeah

Name Date

Read the Story

In those days there was no king in Israel. A Levite went to Bethlehem Judah to bring his concubine home. Her father kept him eating and drinking for days. Finally, late in the day, they left with a servant and two donkeys.

They passed Jebus, because the Levite would not stay in a city of foreigners. At sunset they came to Gibeah of Benjamin. No one took them in. Then an old man from the field said, Peace be to you! Don't sleep in the street. He brought them in, and they ate and drank.

Wicked fellows of the city surrounded the house and beat on the door. The Levite's concubine was put outside, and the men hurt her very badly through the night. In the morning she lay at the door and did not answer. The Levite sent a message to all the tribes of Israel. Everyone said such a deed had not been done since Israel came up out of Egypt. Consider it, take counsel, and speak.

Worse Than Strangers

Name Date

Read and Think

Chapter 19 begins, In those days, when there was no king in Israel. A Levite traveled to Bethlehem Judah to bring back his concubine, who had left him. Her father welcomed him warmly and kept urging him to stay. On the fifth evening, the Levite insisted on leaving with his concubine, his servant, and two donkeys.

Near Jebus, the servant suggested stopping, but the Levite refused to lodge among foreigners and pressed on to Gibeah, an Israelite town of Benjamin. There no one took them in. Only an old man, himself from Ephraim, offered hospitality, saying, Peace be to you! Just let me supply all your needs, but don't sleep in the street.

That night, wicked men of the city surrounded the house. The Levite forced his concubine outside to save himself, and the men abused her all night. At dawn she fell at the door with her hands on the threshold. When the Levite told her to get up, no one answered. He cut her body into twelve pieces and sent them through Israel. All who saw it said nothing like it had happened since the Exodus. The town of Israelites had acted worse than the foreigners the Levite feared.

How Far Israel Had Fallen

Name Date

Read and Think

This chapter records one of the darkest events in Scripture to show how far Israel had fallen without faithful leadership. It opens with the phrase, In those days, when there was no king in Israel. A Levite went to Bethlehem Judah to bring back his concubine. Her father pressed him to stay day after day, and the Levite finally departed late on the fifth day.

Passing Jebus, he refused to enter a city of foreigners and went on to Gibeah of Benjamin, sure his own people would receive him. Yet no one took them in. Only an old man from Ephraim, a sojourner there, came from his work in the field and said, Peace be to you! Just let me supply all your needs, but don't sleep in the street. He fed the donkeys, and the guests washed their feet and ate.

Then certain wicked fellows surrounded the house and beat on the door. The Levite seized his concubine and brought her out. The men abused her all night. At dawn she fell at the door, her hands on the threshold. The Levite said, Get up, and let's get going! But no one answered. He cut her body into twelve pieces and sent them throughout Israel. All who saw it said, Such a deed has not been done or seen from the day that the children of Israel came up out of the land of Egypt to this day! Consider it, take counsel, and speak. Scripture records this as evil, not as an example.
