A Tribe Without God's Way

Name Date

Read the Story

In those days there was no king in Israel. The tribe of the Danites was looking for land to live in. They sent five men of valor to spy out the land. At Micah's house they knew the voice of the Levite.

They asked the Levite to ask God about their trip. He said, Go in peace. The men found Laish, where people lived quiet and secure. They told Dan the land was very good, and not to be slothful to possess it.

Six hundred armed men came to Micah's house and took the carved image, the ephod, and the teraphim. They asked the priest, Isn't it better to be priest to a tribe? His heart was glad, and he went. Micah said, You have taken away my gods which I made, and the priest, and have gone away! Dan attacked and took Laish, named it Dan, and set up the image.

Stolen Gods

Name Date

Read and Think

Again the chapter begins, In those days there was no king in Israel. The Danites' inheritance had not yet fallen to them, so they looked for a place to live. Five spies stayed at Micah's house and recognized the Levite's voice. They asked him to inquire of God, and he told them to go in peace.

The spies found Laish, a quiet people living securely and far from any help. They urged their tribe to take it. Six hundred armed Danites came north, and the spies told them about Micah's ephod, teraphim, and images. They took everything while the armed men stood at the gate.

The Levite objected only until they offered him a bigger job as priest to a whole tribe. Micah chased them and cried, You have taken away my gods which I made! But the Danites threatened him, and he went home. Dan struck Laish and burned it, rebuilt it as Dan, and set up Micah's image. A grandson of Moses served as their priest, and the image remained all the time God's house was in Shiloh.

Idols for Hire

Name Date

Read and Think

Chapter 18 shows a whole tribe doing what was right in its own eyes. The Danites still had no settled inheritance, so they sent five men of valor from Zorah and Eshtaol to search the land. At Micah's house they recognized the Levite and asked him to consult God. He answered, Go in peace. Your way is before Yahweh.

At Laish the spies found a people quiet and secure, far from the Sidonians, with no one to defend them. They urged their brothers not to be slothful. Six hundred armed men set out, camped at a place later called Mahaneh Dan, and came to Micah's house. While the warriors stood at the gate, the five spies carried off the engraved image, the ephod, the teraphim, and the molten image.

The Levite protested until they offered him a tribe instead of one household; then his heart was glad, and he took the idols himself. Micah pursued, crying that they had taken the gods he made and asking what more he had. The Danites warned him to be silent or lose his life. Dan struck Laish and burned it, rebuilt it as Dan, and set up the image. Jonathan, son of Gershom, son of Moses, and his sons served as priests there until the captivity. Even a descendant of Moses had joined in false worship.

Show What You Know

  1. Why did Dan send out spies?

  2. What did the Levite tell the spies?

  3. What made the Levite's heart glad?

  4. What did Micah ask?

  5. Who served as priests at Dan?
