Samson's Secret

Name Date

Read the Story

Samson went to Gaza. The people waited at the gate to catch him. At midnight Samson got up. He picked up the city gates and carried them up a hill!

Samson loved a woman named Delilah. The Philistine leaders paid her silver to learn his secret. Three times Samson told her something that was not true. At last he told her that no razor had ever cut his hair. She had his hair cut. God left him. The Philistines took away his sight and put him in prison.

In prison, his hair began to grow again. The Philistines had a party for their false god Dagon. They brought Samson to make fun of him. Samson prayed, Lord, remember me, and make me strong one more time. He pushed the two middle pillars. The house fell, and Samson died with the Philistines.

Lord, Remember Me

Name Date

Read the Story

Samson went to Gaza. The men waited at the gate all night. At midnight Samson pulled up the doors of the gate, posts and all, and carried them to a hilltop.

Samson loved Delilah. The lords of the Philistines each offered her eleven hundred pieces of silver to learn his strength. Samson lied three times, about green cords, new ropes, and weaving his hair. She pressed him daily. Then he told her all his heart. While he slept, his seven locks were shaved, and Yahweh departed from him. The Philistines took away his sight and made him grind at the mill.

But the hair of his head began to grow again. At a feast for Dagon, the Philistines called Samson to entertain them. He stood between the pillars. He called to Yahweh, Lord Yahweh, remember me, please, and strengthen me. He pushed the pillars, and the house fell. Samson died with the Philistines. He had judged Israel twenty years.

Strength Lost and Renewed

Name Date

Read and Think

Samson's weakness for wrong choices continued. In Gaza, enemies waited to kill him at dawn, but he rose at midnight and carried away the city gate. Then he loved Delilah, and the Philistine lords promised her eleven hundred pieces of silver each if she discovered his secret.

Three times Delilah tied Samson, called out that the Philistines were on him, and three times he broke free. She accused him of mocking her and pressed him daily until his soul was troubled to death. He finally told her all his heart: he was a Nazirite, and if shaved he would become weak. She had his seven locks shaved, and he did not know Yahweh had departed from him. The Philistines put out his eyes and made him grind at the mill in prison.

However, his hair began to grow again. The Philistines praised Dagon for delivering Samson to them and brought him out to entertain them. Samson asked the boy leading him to let him feel the pillars. He prayed, Lord Yahweh, remember me, please, and strengthen me, please, only this once. He pushed the two middle pillars, and the house fell on the lords and the people, and Samson died with them.

Judges 16 · Grade 5

Remember Me, Please

Name Date

Read and Think

The last chapter of Samson's life shows strength wasted and then used one final time. In Gaza he escaped an ambush by carrying off the gate, doors, posts, and bar to a hill before Hebron. Then he loved Delilah of the valley of Sorek. The lords of the Philistines offered her eleven hundred pieces of silver each to discover how to bind and afflict him.

Delilah tried three times: seven green cords, new ropes, and weaving his seven locks into the loom. Each time Samson broke free, and each time she asked again. Her daily pressure troubled his soul to death, and he told her all his heart. She had his head shaved while he slept. He awoke expecting to shake himself free as at other times, but he didn't know that Yahweh had departed from him. The Philistines put out his eyes, bound him with bronze fetters, and set him grinding in the Gaza prison.

Yet the hair of his head began to grow again after he was shaved. At a great sacrifice to Dagon, the Philistines boasted that their god had given them Samson. They brought him out to perform, with about three thousand on the roof. Samson prayed, Lord Yahweh, remember me, please, and strengthen me, please, only this once. He pushed the two middle pillars and the house fell. Dagon had been praised, but Yahweh showed His power. Samson was buried in the tomb of his father Manoah after judging Israel twenty years. In the New Testament, Hebrews names Samson with Gideon, Barak, and Jephthah among people of faith (Hebrews 11:32).
