Water at En Hakkore

Name Date

Read the Story

At wheat harvest, Samson went to visit his wife. Her father said he had given her to Samson's companion. Samson took revenge. He caught three hundred foxes, tied torches between their tails, and burned the Philistines' grain and olive groves.

The Philistines came to Judah. Three thousand men of Judah asked Samson, Don't you know the Philistines rule over us? They bound him with two new ropes. At Lehi, Yahweh's Spirit came on him. The ropes became like burned flax. With a donkey's jawbone, he defeated many Philistines.

Samson was very thirsty. He called on Yahweh and said, You have given this great deliverance. Shall I now die of thirst? God split the hollow place in Lehi, and water came out. His spirit came again, and he revived. He judged Israel twenty years.

Revenge and Rescue

Name Date

Read and Think

When Samson learned his wife had been given to his companion, he decided to harm the Philistines. He caught three hundred foxes, tied them tail to tail with torches, and sent them into the grain fields. The Philistines answered by killing his wife and her father, and Samson struck back again. Revenge kept growing.

Samson hid in the cave of Etam's rock. When the Philistines camped in Judah, three thousand men of Judah came to bind him, asking, Don't you know the Philistines are rulers over us? They tied him with two new ropes. At Lehi, Yahweh's Spirit came mightily on him, the ropes fell away, and with a donkey's jawbone he struck a thousand men.

Then Samson was terribly thirsty. Then he called on Yahweh. He said God had given this great deliverance by the hand of His servant, and asked if he would now die of thirst. God split the hollow place at Lehi, and water flowed. Samson revived, and the spring was named En Hakkore.

Judges 15 · Grade 5

Calling on God at Last

Name Date

Read and Think

Chapter 15 traces a cycle of revenge. Samson returned with a young goat to visit his wife, only to learn her father had given her to his companion. Samson said this time he would be blameless toward the Philistines. He tied three hundred foxes tail to tail with torches and burned their standing grain, vineyards, and olive groves. The Philistines retaliated by killing his wife and her father, and Samson struck them hip and thigh.

Israel's response is striking. Instead of joining Samson, three thousand men of Judah came to bind him for the Philistines, saying the Philistines were rulers over them. Samson let them tie him with two new ropes. At Lehi, as the Philistines shouted, Yahweh's Spirit came mightily on him, the ropes became like flax burned with fire, and he struck a thousand men with the fresh jawbone of a donkey. He named the place Ramath Lehi.

Then exhausted and very thirsty, Samson called on Yahweh. He acknowledged that God had given this great deliverance by the hand of His servant. God answered by splitting the hollow place in Lehi so water came out; when Samson drank, his spirit returned and he revived. The spring was called En Hakkore. Samson judged Israel twenty years in the days of the Philistines.
