At the wedding feast, Samson told a riddle to thirty young men. Out of the eater came food. Out of the strong came sweetness. They could not guess it. They made his wife find out. Then they said, What is sweeter than honey? What is stronger than a lion? Samson got angry and fought Philistines.

A Riddle at the Feast

Name Date

Read the Story

Samson saw a Philistine woman in Timnah and wanted to marry her. His parents asked why he would not choose a wife from his own people. Samson said, Get her for me, for she pleases me well.

In the vineyards of Timnah, a young lion roared at him. Yahweh's Spirit came mightily on him, and he tore it with his bare hands. Later, he found a swarm of bees and honey in its body. He ate some and gave some to his parents, but he did not tell them where it came from.

At the feast Samson told thirty companions a riddle: Out of the eater came out food. Out of the strong came out sweetness. If they could answer, he would give them thirty linen garments. They pressured his wife, and she wept seven days until he told her. Then Samson angrily fought Philistines to pay what he owed.

Memory Verse

“He said to them, “Out of the eater came out food. Out of the strong came out sweetness.” They couldn’t in three days declare the riddle.”

Strength Without Wisdom

Name Date

Read and Think

Samson's story shows great strength joined to poor choices. He saw a Philistine woman in Timnah and demanded his parents get her for him, though they asked him to marry among his own people. The text says his parents did not know this was of Yahweh, who was seeking an occasion against the Philistines, who ruled Israel.

On the way, Yahweh's Spirit came mightily on Samson, and he tore apart a young lion with his bare hands. Later he found bees and honey in the carcass, scooped it out, and ate as he walked. Samson kept it secret from his parents.

At the seven-day feast, Samson gave thirty companions a riddle about the eater and the strong. When they could not solve it, they threatened his wife. She wept and pressed him until he told her, and she told them. Samson answered their mocking, then in anger struck thirty Philistines at Ashkelon to pay the wager and went home.

Sweetness From the Strong

Name Date

Read and Think

Samson began with every advantage: a promised birth, a Nazirite vow, and Yahweh's blessing. Yet chapter 14 opens with Samson insisting on a Philistine wife because she pleased him well. His parents objected. The narrator adds that his parents did not know it was of Yahweh, who sought an occasion against the Philistines. God was working even through Samson's stubborn choices, without approving them.

In the vineyards of Timnah, Yahweh's Spirit came mightily on Samson, and he tore a young lion as if it were a young goat. Returning later, he found a swarm of bees and honey in the lion's carcass and ate it. He gave some to his parents but did not tell them it came from the lion's body.

At the wedding feast, Samson posed his riddle: Out of the eater came out food. Out of the strong came out sweetness. The thirty companions could not solve it in three days. On the seventh day they threatened to burn his wife and her father's house. She pressed him with tears, he told her, and she told them. Before sunset they answered, What is sweeter than honey? What is stronger than a lion? Yahweh's Spirit came on Samson, and he struck thirty men at Ashkelon to pay the wager. His wife was then given to his companion.
