Name Date

Read the Story

Israel did evil, and the Philistines ruled forty years. Manoah of the family of the Danites had a wife who was barren.

Judges 13 · Grade 4

Set Apart Before Birth

Name Date

Read and Think

Israel again did evil, and God gave them to the Philistines for forty years. This time the chapter does not say Israel cried out. Yet God began a rescue anyway, starting with a family from Zorah of the Danites. Manoah's wife was childless.

Yahweh's angel told her she would bear a son. She must drink no wine nor strong drink and eat no unclean thing, because the boy would be a Nazirite to God from the womb, and no razor would touch his head. He would begin to save Israel. Manoah prayed for the man of God to return and teach them what to do.

God heard Manoah, and the angel returned. Manoah offered a young goat with a meal offering on a rock, and the angel rose in the flame. Manoah and his wife fell on their faces. Manoah said they would die because they had seen God, but his wife reasoned that God would not have received their offering if He meant to kill them. She bore a son and named him Samson, and Yahweh's Spirit began to move him.

Judges 13 · Grade 5

Grace Before Asking

Name Date

Read and Think

The final cycle of judges begins with evil and forty years of Philistine rule, but with no cry for help from Israel. God acts anyway. He chooses a barren woman from Zorah, of the family of the Danites, the wife of Manoah. The birth would clearly be God's gift.

The angel's message set the child apart. The mother must avoid wine, strong drink, and anything unclean, because the boy would be a Nazirite to God from the womb, and no razor would come on his head. He would only begin to save Israel from the Philistines; the full deliverance would come later. Manoah prayed that the man of God would come again and teach them. God listened.

When the angel returned, Manoah asked his name. The angel answered that it was incomprehensible. Manoah offered a young goat on the rock, and the angel ascended in the flame of the altar while the couple watched and fell on their faces. Manoah feared death, but his wife wisely noted that God had accepted their offering and shown them these things. The woman bore Samson. The child grew, Yahweh blessed him, and Yahweh's Spirit began to move him in Mahaneh Dan.

  2. What three things must the mother avoid?

  3. Why does the text say he would only begin to save Israel?
