Judges 13 · Grade 4
Set Apart Before Birth
Read and Think
Israel again did evil, and God gave them to the Philistines for forty years. This time the chapter does not say Israel cried out. Yet God began a rescue anyway, starting with a family from Zorah of the Danites. Manoah's wife was childless.
Yahweh's angel told her she would bear a son. She must drink no wine nor strong drink and eat no unclean thing, because the boy would be a Nazirite to God from the womb, and no razor would touch his head. He would begin to save Israel. Manoah prayed for the man of God to return and teach them what to do.
God heard Manoah, and the angel returned. Manoah offered a young goat with a meal offering on a rock, and the angel rose in the flame. Manoah and his wife fell on their faces. Manoah said they would die because they had seen God, but his wife reasoned that God would not have received their offering if He meant to kill them. She bore a son and named him Samson, and Yahweh's Spirit began to move him.
