A Rejected Man Leads

Name Date

Read the Story

Jephthah the Gileadite was a mighty man of valor. His half-brothers drove him out and said he would not inherit. He fled to the land of Tob.

When Ammon made war, the elders of Gilead asked Jephthah to be their chief. He asked, Didn't you hate me? They promised Yahweh would be witness. The people made him head, and he spoke all his words before Yahweh in Mizpah.

Jephthah sent messengers to Ammon. He explained that Israel had not taken Ammon's land, and he said, May Yahweh the Judge be judge today. Yahweh's Spirit came on him, and God gave him victory. But Jephthah had made a hasty promise to God. It brought great sadness to him and his only daughter. Every year the daughters of Israel honored her for four days.

Jephthah's Hasty Vow

Name Date

Read and Think

Jephthah was a brave warrior, but his half-brothers drove him away because his mother was not their mother. He lived in Tob, and other outcasts joined him. When Ammon attacked, the elders who had rejected him came asking for help. Jephthah agreed to lead them, and he spoke all his words before Yahweh in Mizpah.

Before fighting, Jephthah tried words. He sent messengers to the king of Ammon, retelling how Israel came from Egypt, went around Edom and Moab, and received the land from God. He said Israel had lived there three hundred years. He ended, May Yahweh the Judge be judge today. The king would not listen.

Yahweh's Spirit came on Jephthah. Then he vowed that whatever came out of his house to meet him would be offered to Yahweh. God gave him a great victory. But his only child, his daughter, came out dancing with tambourines. Jephthah tore his clothes in grief. She asked for two months to mourn with her friends. Then he kept his vow, and the text gives no more detail. God never asked for such a promise.

Judges 11 · Grade 5

Faith, Words, and a Rash Vow

Name Date

Read and Think

Jephthah's story begins with rejection. His half-brothers drove him from the family because he was the son of another woman, so he lived in Tob with outlaws. Yet when Ammon made war, Gilead's elders came to him. Jephthah reminded them of their hatred, then agreed to lead if Yahweh gave victory. He spoke all his words before Yahweh in Mizpah.

Jephthah first sought peace. In a long message he showed that Israel had not taken land from Moab or Ammon; they had defeated Sihon the Amorite only after Sihon attacked. Israel had lived there three hundred years without challenge. Jephthah left the dispute to God: May Yahweh the Judge be judge today. The king of Ammon ignored him.

Then Yahweh's Spirit came on Jephthah. Even so, he vowed that whatever came out of his doors to meet him would be Yahweh's and offered as a burnt offering. God delivered Ammon into his hand. His only child, his daughter, came out to meet him with tambourines and dances, and Jephthah tore his clothes. She accepted his word, mourned two months on the mountains with her companions, and returned; the text says he did with her according to his vow and gives no further detail. God had not required this vow. Israel's daughters honored his daughter four days each year. In the New Testament, Hebrews names Jephthah with Gideon, Barak, and Samson among people of faith (Hebrews 11:32).

  1. Why did Jephthah live in Tob with outlaws?

  2. How did Jephthah first seek peace?

  3. To whom did Jephthah leave the dispute?

  4. What did Jephthah vow?

  5. How was his daughter honored?

Think About It

  1. The Spirit of Yahweh had already come on Jephthah, yet he still made a vow to try to secure victory. Why might people try to bargain with God instead of trusting Him?
