Who Goes First?

Name Date

Read the Story

Joshua had died. God's people asked God a question. Who should go up first to fight the Canaanites?

God said Judah should go. Judah went, and God was with them. They took many towns. Caleb gave his daughter Achsah to Othniel. She asked her dad for springs of water. He gave her two springs.

But some tribes did not drive the Canaanites out. They let them stay in the land. God had told them to drive them out.

Judges 1 · Grade 3

Judah Goes Up

Name Date

Read the Story

After the death of Joshua, Israel asked God who should go first against the Canaanites. God answered that Judah would go. He said He had given the land into Judah's hand.

Judah and Simeon went together, and God was with Judah. Caleb promised his daughter Achsah to the man who took the city of Kiriath Sepher. Othniel took it. Achsah asked Caleb for a blessing. He gave her the upper and lower springs.

Judah could not drive out the people of the valley, who had chariots of iron. Then the chapter lists tribe after tribe that did not drive out the Canaanites. The Canaanites kept living among them.

Judges 1 · Grade 4

A Good Start, an Unfinished Job

Name Date

Read and Think

The book of Judges begins after the death of Joshua. Israel still had land to take, so they asked God who should go first. God chose Judah and promised to give the land into his hand. Judah asked Simeon to fight beside them.

Judah won many battles. They captured a king named Adoni-Bezek and cut off his thumbs and big toes, the same thing he had done to seventy kings. Othniel the son of Kenaz captured Kiriath Sepher and married Caleb's daughter Achsah. She boldly asked for springs of water, and Caleb gave them.

But the chapter ends with a warning. Benjamin, Manasseh, Ephraim, Zebulun, Asher, Naphtali, and Dan did not drive out the Canaanites. God's people settled for living beside those who did not worship Him.

  1. Who did God choose to go first?

  2. What had Adoni-Bezek done to seventy kings?

  3. What did Achsah ask Caleb for?

  4. What did many tribes fail to do?

Judges 1 · Grade 5

Halfway Obedience

Name Date

Read and Think

Judges opens where Joshua ended. Israel had entered the land, but much of it was still held by the Canaanites. The people did the right thing first: they asked Yahweh who should lead the fight. God named Judah and promised victory, and Judah invited Simeon to share the work.

Judah defeated the Canaanites at Bezek and attacked Jerusalem and set it on fire. Adoni-Bezek admitted that God had repaid him for his own cruelty to seventy kings. Othniel the son of Kenaz took Kiriath Sepher. Achsah, his new wife, asked her father for a blessing, and Caleb gave her the upper and lower springs. The scene shows faith that asks God's people boldly for good gifts.

Then the tone changes. Judah could not drive out the valley people, who had chariots of iron. Benjamin did not drive out the Jebusites, and tribe after tribe let the Canaanites stay, some only as forced laborers. This partial obedience sets up the sad pattern of the whole book.

Show What You Know

  1. What did Israel do right at the start?

  2. What did Adoni-Bezek admit?

  3. What did Caleb give Achsah?

  4. What did Benjamin fail to do?

  5. Why does this chapter matter for the rest of the book?
