Judges 1 · Grade 5
Halfway Obedience
Read and Think
Judges opens where Joshua ended. Israel had entered the land, but much of it was still held by the Canaanites. The people did the right thing first: they asked Yahweh who should lead the fight. God named Judah and promised victory, and Judah invited Simeon to share the work.
Judah defeated the Canaanites at Bezek and attacked Jerusalem and set it on fire. Adoni-Bezek admitted that God had repaid him for his own cruelty to seventy kings. Othniel the son of Kenaz took Kiriath Sepher. Achsah, his new wife, asked her father for a blessing, and Caleb gave her the upper and lower springs. The scene shows faith that asks God's people boldly for good gifts.
Then the tone changes. Judah could not drive out the valley people, who had chariots of iron. Benjamin did not drive out the Jebusites, and tribe after tribe let the Canaanites stay, some only as forced laborers. This partial obedience sets up the sad pattern of the whole book.

Achsah asked boldly for springs. What good thing could you ask God for this week?
