Joshua 9 · Grade 3
Look Closely, Ask God
Read the Story
When the people of Gibeon heard what Joshua did to Jericho and Ai, they used a trick. They put old sacks and torn wineskins on their donkeys. They wore patched sandals and old clothes. Their bread was dry and moldy.
They told Joshua, Your servants have come from a very far country. They showed their moldy bread and torn wineskins. The men sampled their food, and didn't ask counsel from Yahweh's mouth. Joshua made peace and a covenant to let them live.
Three days later Israel learned the Gibeonites were neighbors. The people grumbled, but the princes said, We have sworn to them by Yahweh. So Israel kept the promise. The Gibeonites became wood cutters and drawers of water for the congregation and for Yahweh's altar.
